Why LG Autonomy Bill Suffered Setback, By Egenu

LACK of commitment and understanding on the part of those charged with handling affairs at the local government level, has been advanced as an obstacle against the proposed local government autonomy bill now before the State Houses of Assembly.

This position was disclosed by the chairman of Delta State Councilors’ Forum, Hon. Kema Egenu, in a speech delivered at a 3-day Peace Sensitization movement by the leaders of the legislative arms in the 25 local government areas of the state.

Hon. Egenu, who is also the Leader of Oshimili North local government Legislative Arm, posited that Councilors can only exhibit maturity if they tow party lines on which they secured their mandates.

While insisting that no individual is above the party, charged the councilors to maintain peace in the councils and to bear in mind that conduct contrary to the party’s position might be resisted by the party.

He called for a mutual working condition between the councilors and the council chairmen in the state, advising that councilors should always follow due process as provided by the law in resolving issues.

Speaking further, Hon. Egenu appealed to the state government to put in place a mechanism to monitor the councilor’s tax deductions and onward remittance to the state Board of Internal Revenue so that councilors can be guaranteed of tax payment receipts/certificate at the end of their tenure.

While also commending the state Governor, Senetor Ifeanyi Okowa, for his developmental strides since assumption of office, he described him as a nation builder and his SMART agenda as a ray of hope for Deltans.

He called on councilors to complement the peace drive of the governor through peaceful co-existence with their various council chairmen.
