Pregnant woman in labour dies after allegedly being delayed by policemen for not wearing face mask in Ogun State

A pregnant woman who was in labour died today after she was allegedly delayed by police officers for not wearing a face mask in the Ogun Waterside local government area of Ogun state.

According to reports, the deceased, Waidat Adedeji, went into labour and was being rushed on a motorcycle by one of her children to the Ita-Otu General hospital when they were stopped by police officers at Sowore checkpoint. The police officers inquired why they were not wearing face masks and also not obeying the social distancing order of the state government.

It was gathered that the policemen allegedly delayed the motorcyclist for hours before they were later released. The woman reportedly died some minutes after.

Youths in the area blamed the police for her death. As a way of protest, they took her corpse and dumped it at the Abigi Divisional Police Headquarters.

Confirming the incident to Tribune, the spokesperson of the state police command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, denied the claim that police officers caused the pregnant woman's death.

“Our officers were not responsible for the pregnant woman’s death. There were three occupants on a motorcycle as against the directive of the state government that only two people should occupy a motorcycle at a time. They were stopped and interrogated on why they did not obey the sit at home order. They informed the police that the woman was being conveyed to hospital for delivery, and having noticed that the woman was in pains, our men allowed them to proceed,” he said

Native Doctor commits suicide in Abia

A native doctor in Abia state, identified as Onyeonoziri Friday, has allegedly committed suicide in front of his home in Ukpakiri village in Amaise autonomous community in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State, leaving behind a pregnant wife and a son.

The state Commissioner of Police, Ene Okon, who confirmed Onyeonoziri's death to newsmen, said the native doctor hung himself in front of his shrine which is located at the back of his apartment. He was said to have been battling with series of illnesses and became frustrated and depressed after several efforts to get healed through different sacrifices proved abortive.

A source in the area who gave her name as Ogadinma Nwachukwu told The Naton that they woke up on Sunday morning to the cry of help from his compound.

''It was this morning that we started hearing cries from his house and when we all gathered, we discovered that our brother, whom we all sat yesterday with is gone.
When we asked the wife, she said that the husband told her that he was going to pass the night at Ntighauzor. After that, she went inside the house while the husband told her that he wants to leave his machine behind the house. According to her, she came out in the morning, only to see the corpse of the husband dangling on a tree behind their house.” Ogadinma said

The police say investigation is ongoing to determine if there is any foul play.

Pomp and Pageantry, As Obasanjo Commissions Stephen Keshi Stadium

AMIDST pomp and pageantry, former President Olusegun Obsasanjo today (19/11/18), commissioned the 23, 000 capacity Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.

The former President who had earlier commissioned the dualised old Lagos/Asaba road, from Emuhu junction to Agbor-Obi junction, the dualised Owei-Ekei/Owa-Alero road, from old Lagos/Asaba road to Owa-Alero round about before moving to Asaba to commission the Stephen Keshi Stadium, observed that with the stadium, Delta State will continue with its winning streaks in sporting activities.

Apparently excited with the quality of projects seen, the former President danced to the admiration of large spectators including the Asaba traditional council of chiefs who turned out for the commissioning exercise.

While commending Governor Okowa for constructing such an edifice, the former President stated that the stadium would also, provide avenue for people to exercise, stating, “whoever you are, whatever age you are, you must exercise, you must be fit.”

He observed that the stadium would boost the economy of the state and urged Governor Okowa to add hostel facilities in the stadium for people to live in the stadium and have opportunities of training round the clock to enable them become future world champions.

“We must catch them young, we have the facilities, we have to recruit those who will win, train them from young age,” he said, adding, “build a hostel where you will put people that you will train day and night and they will be going to school from the stadium and in whatever sports, Delta State will be the best.”

“I was here to perform the ground breaking ceremony of the stadium, I am here to commission it and I will be here again to see the hostel,” he stated, asserting, “Governor Okowa is not just a Road Master, he is also a Stadium Master, and because of the work he has done, he is also the Bulldozer.”

Chief Obasanjo thanked the governor for giving him the opportunity to come to the state and commission projects.

Governor Okowa had thanked the former President for commissioning projects in the state, attributing the success stories of his administration to the handiwork of God.

“Beyond entertainment and sports tourism, we must try and grow the local economy and this stadium is one of the ways of growing the local economy, for every sporting activities that take place in the stadium, a lot of socio-economic activities are witnessed,” he said, adding, “the fact that the Super Eagles trained here, an international flight took off from Asaba to Johannesburg, by the grace of God, we will work with private concessional to make Asaba airport truly international airport to grow our economy.”

The Asagba of Asaba, Prof. Chike Edozien, represented at the occasion by the Iyase of Asaba, Chief Patrick Onyeobi thanked Governor Okowa for his interest in the development of Asaba and other parts of the state, observing that since the coming of the governor, Asaba is wearing a status befitting a capital of an oil producing state.

High point of the exercise was the taking of the kick-off for finals of the Zenith Bank/Delta State Principals Cup between Niger Mixed Secondary School and West End Mixed Secondary School played at the Stephen Keshi Stadium by former President Obasanjo.

Plateau Killings: Niger Delta Militants To Go After Herdsmen and Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders’ Association, If Nothing Is Done In 21 Days

A coalition of Niger Delta militants, yesterday, gave the Federal Government a 21-day notice to end killings in the country.

The group lamented the recent killing by herdsmen in Plateau State.

The militants, who met at Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom State during the weekend, also tasked the Federal Government on protection of lives and property of Nigerians.

The militants warned the Federal Government that there’ll be doom if failed to forestall anarchy and further bloodshed.

They declared a 21-day mourning period for those massacred recently in Plateau State by rampaging herdsmen, and threatened to declare herdsmen and Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders’ Association enemies.

A statement by leader of the coalition, W.O I Izonebi, read, “As agitators with conscience, we take lives of fellow Nigerians sacrosanct as no amount of provocation will lead to the slaughtering of innocent Nigerians because of cows.

“We, therefore, declare 21 days of mourning for the innocent Nigerians killed in Plateau State by foreigners trained by late Gaddafi that are now masquerading as herdsmen, according to our President, Muhammadu Buhari.

“We urge the government to do the needful before the expiration of our 21 days of mourning to avoid a total breakdown of law and order because it seems we do not have law, and government is unable to implement its primary responsibility of protecting lives and properties of its citizens.

“We demand implementation of the following to avoid doom and more loss of lives: The immediate devolution of power to states and regions to enable governors discharge their primary responsibility of protecting lives and properties and declaration and proscription of the Gaddafi mercenaries masquerading as herdsmen as a terrorist organisation.

“The government and security agencies saddled with the responsibility of protecting Nigeria and its territorial integrity should apprehend the perpetrators of this heinous crime against innocent Nigerians and humanity; total overhaul of the security organisation and security chiefs, immediate arrest of the Miyeti Allah Cattle Breeders Association leaders and its disbandment with immediate effect.

“We also condemn the inability of the government and securityagencies to protect its citizens from foreigners masquerading asherdsmen committing genocide in the Middle Belt of our dear nation, Nigeria.

“We are not going to fold our arms to see foreigners masquerading as herdsmen slaughter and kill hardworking Nigerians that are going about their legitimate businesses and livelihood anymore, when we have a democratically elected government in place.

“We are bold to ask these questions? What is the primary responsibility of government? Why is nobody being arrested and prosecuted for these killings? As agitators with conscience, we take lives of follow Nigerians sacrosanct as no amount of provocation will lead to the slaughtering of innocent Nigerians because of cows.

“We, therefore, warn that after this 21 days of mourning is over and nothing is done, we, the good people of the Niger Delta, and coalition of agitators will have no choice than to declare herdsmen and Miyeti Allah Cattle Breeders Association enemies of the Niger Delta and Nigerians in general.

“Therefore, we do not wish to see them in any of the Niger Delta states because the pollution and degradation of our farmlands and the polluted waters and rivers are enough provocation, let alone seeing our mothers and sisters in a life threatening situation and being killed by cattle breeders, while the Miyeti Allah is applauding them because they value the lives of cows more than human lives.

“Enough of this carnage going on, we should use this 21 days of mourning to reflect and ask the question, if we are truly a nation where the life of a cow is more valuable than human life.”

ROAD CONSTRUCTION-A VERY CRITICAL AND STRATEGIC PART OF GOV OKOWA'S SMART AGENDA.

By virtue of its overall strategic importance to the socioeconomic wellbeing of any given society, it's doubtful whether any meaningful progress can be attained in an environment devoid of motorable roads and highways.

For instance, motorable roads are very crucial to the movement of humans and agricultural goods from the hinterlands and villages to the urban centres where populations require them for existential survival.

Same also goes for industrial activities wherein large volumes of raw materials and finished products are transported to and fro without the parties involved having to contend with the avoidable financial hassles or costs and physical / mental inconveniences associated with bad and deplorable road networks.

If there is any recurring or noticeable desire among Deltans, it is the need to have a well- charted network of roads,highways,streets and lanes cascading the length and breath of the State. This fortunately is indeed a legitimate and rewarding desire that constitutes a major bedrock of the SMART Agenda of the State Government.

We are not unaware of the cynicism of naysayers who are sometimes unduly appalled concerning the reasons that Gov Okowa has deliberately decided to put much focus on road construction.

We are however also glad that these cynics agree that such focus of His Excellency on roads has in no manner portrayed any disproportionate or neglectful attention on the other critical Sectors. All the same, these cynics have to appreciate that Okowa is one leader who comprehends the importance or place of roads to the social,economic, physiological and psychological wellbeing of the electorate.

To the incurably humane Governor, our car owners and transporters should not be sentenced to repeated or customary visits to spare part dealers and mechanic workshops owing to the deplorable state of our roads. Needless to say too, His Excellency is aware that such avoidable visits end up placing undue pressure on the already overstretched and depleted finances of the victims who suffer like most other Nigerians from the economic recession that has hit citizens and even the Governments of Nigeria.

Under the SMART Agenda, Deltan and Federal roads are critical to the Vision to make Delta State an industrial hub of the South South region.

It is actually the desire of Gov Okowa to ensure that industrialists, agricultural entrepreneurs ( including those from the STEP and YAGEP ),artisans etc are able to move raw materials and finished products with ease no matter where they are located across the State.

Remarkably too,the spread of road construction by the current State Government has been adjudged and hailed by many as very equitably and fairly distributed and equally tailored to the peculiarities of the terrains wherein they are situated.

The simple explanation is that Gov Okowa being an ardent pan- Deltan, is driven unrepentantly with the consciousness that all nooks and crannies of the three Senatorial Districts deserve the dividends of Democracy which include motorable roads.

The Okowa administration is also irrevocably committed to executing projects which are capable of standing the test of time and in the light of this, any contractor found. doing shoddy jobs will be blacklisted regardless of the number of kilometres of roads already executed.

During the Ministerial Press Briefing held in Asaba in the month of April, 2018, the indefatigable Commissioner for Works, Chief James Augoye had gladly informed the audience that the
Delta State Government has embarked on the construction, reconstruction, rehabilitation
and maintenance of 208 road projects in three years.

According to the Honourable Commissioner, the State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has approved and awarded the construction of 193 road projects covering over 732km and 229km of concrete drains between May 2015 and March 2018.

He further noted that the seeming increase and pace of new projects across the State stemmed mainly from the large rates of approval and award of projects across the State by the current administration; adding that the number of inherited projects from the previous administrations also have led to the increase in the number o ongoing projects.

His words: “Of the figure, 92 roads covering over 350km have been completed, while 116 roads are at various stages of completion.”

Indeed,going by the unprecedented avalanche of roads being witnessed across the State, it obviously behoves on us as residents of the State to imbibe the appropriate maintenance culture by ensuring that we desist from dumping refuse in the drains in order to prolong the life span of these roads. More so, it is our collective wish that agencies of Government saddled with the upkeep,supervision and maintenance of our roads,drainage works be penalised if found wanting.

At this juncture, I think it is somewhat necessary for me to itemize some of these roads constructed by the State Government ( many of which are already completed,Ongoing or recently awarded ) in order to afford readers the privilege of having a pictorial grasp and appreciation of the laudable achievements of Gov Okowa's Government especially in the Transportation Sector .

By virtue of its overall strategic importance to the socioeconomic wellbeing of any given society, it's doubtful whether any meaningful progress can be attained in an environment devoid of motorable roads and highways.

For instance, motorable roads are very crucial to the movement of humans and agricultural goods from the hinterlands and villages to the urban centres where populations require them for existential survival.

Same also goes for industrial activities wherein large volumes of raw materials and finished products are transported to and fro without the parties involved having to contend with the avoidable financial hassles or costs and physical / mental inconveniences associated with bad and deplorable road networks.

If there is any recurring or noticeable desire among Deltans, it is the need to have a well- charted network of roads,highways,streets and lanes cascading the length and breath of the State. This fortunately is indeed a legitimate and rewarding desire that constitutes a major bedrock of the SMART Agenda of the State Government.

We are not unaware of the cynicism of naysayers who are sometimes unduly appalled concerning the reasons that Gov Okowa has deliberately decided to put much focus on road construction.

We are however also glad that these cynics agree that such focus of His Excellency on roads has in no manner portrayed any disproportionate or neglectful attention on the other critical Sectors. All the same, these cynics have to appreciate that Okowa is one leader who comprehends the importance or place of roads to the social,economic, physiological and psychological wellbeing of the electorate.

To the incurably humane Governor, our car owners and transporters should not be sentenced to repeated or customary visits to spare part dealers and mechanic workshops owing to the deplorable state of our roads. Needless to say too, His Excellency is aware that such avoidable visits end up placing undue pressure on the already overstretched and depleted finances of the victims who suffer like most other Nigerians from the economic recession that has hit citizens and even the Governments of Nigeria.

Under the SMART Agenda, Deltan and Federal roads are critical to the Vision to make Delta State an industrial hub of the South South region.

It is actually the desire of Gov Okowa to ensure that industrialists, agricultural entrepreneurs ( including those from the STEP and YAGEP ),artisans etc are able to move raw materials and finished products with ease no matter where they are located across the State.

Remarkably too,the spread of road construction by the current State Government has been adjudged and hailed by many as very equitably and fairly distributed and equally tailored to the peculiarities of the terrains wherein they are situated.

The simple explanation is that Gov Okowa being an ardent pan- Deltan, is driven unrepentantly with the consciousness that all nooks and crannies of the three Senatorial Districts deserve the dividends of Democracy which include motorable roads.

The Okowa administration is also irrevocably committed to executing projects which are capable of standing the test of time and in the light of this, any contractor found. doing shoddy jobs will be blacklisted regardless of the number of kilometres of roads already executed.

During the Ministerial Press Briefing held in Asaba in the month of April, 2018, the indefatigable Commissioner for Works, Chief James Augoye had gladly informed the audience that the
Delta State Government has embarked on the construction, reconstruction, rehabilitation
and maintenance of 208 road projects in three years.

According to the Honourable Commissioner, the State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has approved and awarded the construction of 193 road projects covering over 732km and 229km of concrete drains between May 2015 and March 2018.

He further noted that the seeming increase and pace of new projects across the State stemmed mainly from the large rates of approval and award of projects across the State by the current administration; adding that the number of inherited projects from the previous administrations also have led to the increase in the number o ongoing projects.

His words: “Of the figure, 92 roads covering over 350km have been completed, while 116 roads are at various stages of completion.”

Indeed,going by the unprecedented avalanche of roads being witnessed across the State, it obviously behoves on us as residents of the State to imbibe the appropriate maintenance culture by ensuring that we desist from dumping refuse in the drains in order to prolong the life span of these roads. More so, it is our collective wish that agencies of Government saddled with the upkeep,supervision and maintenance of our roads,drainage works be penalised if found wanting.

At this juncture, I think it is somewhat necessary for me to itemize some of these roads constructed by the State Government ( many of which are already completed,Ongoing or recently awarded ) in order to afford readers the privilege of having a pictorial grasp and appreciation of the laudable achievements of Gov Okowa's Government especially in the Transportation Sector .

WORLD BANK SCORES DELTA SEEFOR HIGH IN YOUTH EMPLOYMENT

The World Bank has rated Delta State Employment and Expenditure for Results (SEEFOR) high in the implementation of its funded project in the state, especially in the area of employment creation for youths through the acquisition of technical and vocational training.

The assessment was made at the just concluded product exhibition held at the Abuja office of the World Bank by all the implementing states of SEEFOR projects in bead making, fashion designing, event management and decoration among others.

In their separate remarks, the beneficiaries said that World Bank had transformed their lives beyond expectation by boosting their economic status.

Speaking to journalists, the Project Coordinator of Delta SEEFOR project, Mr Benson Ojoko said that the SEEFOR intervention had enabled over 12,000 youths to gain different types of skills required by the labour market.

He added that the Project was providing funding support to Job Creation office for the training of additional 745 youths under STEP and YAGEP training.

Earlier, the Executive Secretary, Delta State Technical and Vocational Education Board, Comrade Michael Akpobire, said that the exhibition of the beneficiaries’ products showed that Delta State had gone beyond purchasing of equipment and infrastructure.

According to him, the State’s beneficiaries had utilized the assistance from the World Bank judiciously and enjoined them to continue in that tempo.

Comrade Akpobire maintained that through the World Bank SEEFOR assisted project, a number of youths in the state had been made potential employers of labour, an initiative he said was geared towards reducing the poverty level in the state.

AS workers’ day was celebrated all over the world on Tuesday (01/05/18), Delta State Governor, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa has said, workers are valuable assets in any policy, programme and project implementation.

Governor Okowa amidst applause from cheering workers reeled out his administration’s achievements in meeting with his electoral promises to workers at the celebration which took place in Asaba. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) organised the event which featured march past by members of their unions.

According to the Governor, “this administration is constantly aware of the sacrifices of workers and their contributions to the development of our dear State and country; our workers remain unarguably very important assets in any policy, programme and project implementation that is why the present administration has sought and will continue to seek the hands of labour so that together, we can attain the enviable heights of progress in our beloved State.”

“I sincerely request your (organised labour) cooperation and understanding as partners in progress; we are always conscious of ensuring harmony to bring out the best in the workforce and I assure you that working together, this administration will continue to protect workers' rights and shall promote incentives for greater productivity leading to greater prosperity,” the Governor said.

He continued, “my dear workers, you are no doubt aware that the State government has approved owner-occupier for the workers residing in the junior staff estate; at the same time, the buildings on the new housing estate on Ibusa road are to be completed and handed over to workers; the present administration has continued to keep our promises to our workers; we are paying salaries promptly, and when the next Paris Club money is received, we shall assist the local government councils that are indebted to their workers to pay off all that they owe.”

“It is important that we make clear distinction between state government and local government, what we do as a state must be seen as assistant because, it is not the duty of the state government to pay salaries of local government councils,” Governor Okowa clarified.

The Governor at the event, announced the appointments of 9 permanent secretaries and the appointment of Mr Tony Obuh and Mr Lawson Efenudu as Chairman and Executive Secretary respectively of the Delta State Pension Board.

He clarified that his administration spends about N1 billion monthly for the payment of pensions, noting that the backlog of pension arrears was much but, his administration was making arrangements to clear the backlog.

Governor Okowa also, thanked civil servants for their cooperation in ensuring that the clock – in, clock – out mechanism introduced in the state was effective, stating, “with the clock-in arrangement, we will ensure that only those who work receives salaries.”

“I am committed to the promotion of worker’s welfare, I have never at any point, suspended promotion of civil servants, but I urge all civil servants to be committed to their duties and ensure effective service delivery,” the Governor stated.

Chairman of the NLC in the state, Comrade Jonathan Jemirieyigbe at the event, said, “the theme of this year’s event is, ‘Labour Movement In National Development, Dare To Struggle, Dare To Win;’ "our Governor while I assure you of the workers continuous support to your administration, the organised labour in the state appreciates the giant strides your administration has made in the past three years through your SMART agenda.”

Comrade Chinedu Nwobodo who is the Chairman of TUC in the state in an address at the event, thanked Governor Okowa’s administration for “paying salaries of workers regularly especially in the trying year of 2016 when the economy was at the verge of collapse.”

Governor of Rivers State, Barr. Nyesom Nwike, said, “as far as we are concerned in Rivers State, Okowa should be preparing for swearing-in because, if any other party is coming to Delta State to contest against Okowa, they should first tell the people what they have done for the people, because, Okowa is a gentleman, he is dependable and he has done very well in Delta State.”
