A transgender woman was held by airport security because her pe nis showed up as an anomaly on flight scanners.
Shadi Petosky said she felt humiliated
after being subjected to a 40-minute pat down by security personnel,
causing her to miss her flight.
The writer was pulled aside and
inspected for explosive material after passing through the full body
scanner for women at Orlando International Airport.
Her pe nis had flagged up as an anomaly on the scan – as mocked up in the tweet below.
I described what the flagging screen looked like to an artist. This is the anomaly. pic.twitter.com/SE0NadkPQX— Shadi Petosky (@shadipetosky) September 22, 2015

Shadi was taken into an interview room
where she told Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officials
she was transgender, explaining ‘That’s my pe nis’.
TSA staff then told her she needed to pass through the full body scanner as a male.
The TSA at the Orlando Airport told me I couldn't take photos but this is denigrating. I have missed my flight pic.twitter.com/PHwBLiJ0cB— Shadi Petosky (@shadipetosky) September 21, 2015

Shadi told The Daily News: ‘I’m
embarrassed about it. It is just a coincidence that I got a pat down for
my genitals, then I had the worst agent and then I tested positive for
explosives.’
But this flag was dead center on my groin. I'm a feminist. I didn't want to make a woman pat my crotch down. I froze.— Shadi Petosky (@shadipetosky) September 22, 2015

She said she had asked the security personnel if they were transgender trained, to which she was told: ‘I know what I am doing’.
Reporters are asking me why I was in Orlando, it was a Harry Potter trip with my Mom for my b-day / her retirement. https://t.co/bTzUjGuD3Y— Shadi Petosky (@shadipetosky) September 22, 2015
By the time she was released she had missed her flight to Minneapolis.
The TSA responded to her complaint
saying: ‘TSA takes all potential civil rights violations very seriously.
We are looking into the situation now for further information.’
I am through. It was about 40 minutes, 2 full body pat downs, fully disassembled luggage. I missed my flight. pic.twitter.com/wLTvP3md9W— Shadi Petosky (@shadipetosky) September 21, 2015
