Baby born with an abnormal bulge that is pushing her BRAIN out of her skull

A Pakistani baby girl who was born with an abnormal bulge on the top of her head is desperately waiting for life-changing surgery.
Anila Ali, from Dokri in the Sindh province of Pakistan, was born with an unusually large, soft head, which doctors diagnosed as a severe form of craniosynostosis.
This is thought to be causing pressure to build inside the three-month-old’s head, which is forcing her brain to spread outside of her skull.
Medics are baffled as to how to treat the newborn, who also suffers from a severe form of spina bifida, which they claim has caused a tumour to develop on her back.
Anila’s 19-year-old mother Naushaba, said: ‘I was happy when I gave birth to Anila, my first child, three months ago in a private clinic.  But, I got afraid when I first saw her head.
‘Her head was not developed properly and doctors told us to take her to the children hospital in Larkana. Her head was so soft that doctors told us that even a small injury on her head can do her a lot of damage.’
Naushaba and her husband Amad Ali, 21, took Anila to Larkana where doctors then advised them to take her to Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Centre in Karachi.
Unable to afford to make the 270-mile (430km) journey, the couple’s friends and family gave them £800 to cover the cost of their travel and stay in Karachi.
Amad, who earns just £4 a day as a daily wage labourer, said: ‘We took a lot of loans to arrange a visit and stay in Karachi.  I wish our daughter gets the right treatment here.’

Nigerian doctor shares photos from a breast lump removal on Instagram

Dr Femi Olaleye took to Instagram to share photos from an excisional breast biopsy, the removal of noncancerous tumor, fibroadenoma. Below is what she wrote:

"When you are recovering from neck pains but still have to help an anxious young lady remove her breast lump - which by all account looks like a Fibroadenoma! A fibroadenoma is a non-cancerous tumor in the breast that is commonly found in women under the age of 30.
Incidentally fibroadenomas are diagnosed in approximately 10 percent of women in the United States (Mammotome). African-American women are more likely to develop these tumors.
A fibroadenoma is a very common benign (not cancerous) breast condition. The most common symptom is a lump in the breast which usually moves when you touch it.

Fibroadenomas often develop during puberty so are mostly found in young women, but they can occur in women of any age!"

Men, eat this fruit & you will get a bigger penis size

This is a sponsored post...

Are you among the few men who are still wondering whether penis size is relevant to women’ sexual satisfaction? There is no need prolonging this issue, just be aware of this – Babes enjoy and crave for bigger penis sizes!
Every chick would like to have a gentleman that is well endowed in penile size and has adequate sexual skills to be able to give her amazing sessions in bed. A lot of chicks would not honestly say the reality about their craving for bigger penises, this is only common. No female wants to be seen as a Ashawo! That is why they pretend.

There are loads of sex surveys that have been carried out by several sex counselors and the outcomes have all pointed that ladies prefer bigger penis sizes just the way nearly all guys prefer larger breasts to little ones. Both in its flabby and erect state, women crave to see large penises. If that makes you a bit gloomy, you just have to swallow that! Which chick doesn’t want an amazing session in bed!? None! And a larger penis is capable of giving a lady a wonderful session in bed!

The main reason why Nigerian women love large penis (especially those who have had lovers that are well endowed) has to do with the structure of the vagina. There are pleasure centers that are located deep into the vagina and around the walls of the vagina. A small or average penis is not capable of stimulating all these pleasure centers and these usually results in a woman not being fully satisfied. But a big penis is able to explore deep into a woman’s vagina give her that lovely feeling of both deep penetration and being completely “full”.

A large number of women need to have their clitoris stimulated during sexual intercourse in order for them to achieve orgasms. A large penis is more capable of stimulating the clitoris during penetration because of the thick base, which would stretch the vaginal lips and provide friction between the penis shaft and the clitoris.

The One Fruit You Need to Eat to Get Bigger Penis

Date fruit: Sexual health therapist DrKazeem, who works at a Sex Clinic in Lagos said men who had performance problems should incorporate dates in their diet. He said: “A ‘date’ fruit is a one-seeded fruit of the date palm tree, which is botanically known as Phoenix dactylifera and belongs to the family of Palmae (Arecaceae) plant. The common English names are dried dates, dates, date palm, etc; usually oblong, with varying sizes, shapes, colours, consistencies and quality. Eating dates will promote sperm quality and quantity as it is one of the best natural fruits used for male fertility. It also increases the size of testes in men and the size of breast in women.”

Note: Eating the date fruit is not enough to take care of your sexual worries but using the Royal Jelly and Gin Chia will help you last longer in bed and also get bigger, thicker, larger and stronger.

 Banana:

This is no surprise. Bananas have potassium and potassium is good for a man’s heart and circulation. Adequate amounts keep sodium levels under control and lower the risk of high blood pressure. Tryptophan found in bananas is a mood enhancer.

The fruit also contains magnesium and manganese, two important minerals a lot of men are deficient in; they are important for a healthy and functional prostate. Last long in bed and satisfy your woman. Most men suffer from weak erection, premature ejaculation, low sperm count and others. This is the reason why their women are never satisfied with them.

Female Genital Mutilation practice increases in Britain with nurses flown in for the procedure

Black Health Initiative, a charity organisation, has revealed illegal practices taking place across the UK where girls less than 15 years of age are subjected to Female Genital Mutilation, after which their families throw a party to celebrate.

It is believed that not less than 8,000 girls have been subjected to this procedure. The practice used to be for the girls to be flown out of the country, but now, nurses are being flown into the country from Africa to carry out FGM on several girls at the same time.

According to Heather Nelson, Chief Executive, Black Health Initiative;

“We know of parties happening here in England and in West Yorkshire. We recently had to break one up, and we've stopped another from taking place.
She added:
"What we're finding now is that where once girls were taken abroad to be cut, specialist midwives are now flown over and several girls are cut at the same time, which then leads to a celebration."
Female genital mutilation is illegal in the UK and as such, such procedures are usually done secretly.

The therapy that reversed my dad's hypertension completely We were all very much hopeful on not losing him (my dad). But we gradually began to lose faith on his chances of survival since almost everything we tried to bring down his blood pressure had failed but thank God “we finally saw the light after the end of a very long tunnel”... http://evergreenhealthsolution.com.ng/hbp.html restored our faith and made my dad a happy man once again. It took us all by surprise when it all started, daddy would complain of headache almost all the time he seem to get fatigued easily than he used to. We were all used to seeing dad wake up very early, whisk out of the house on week days. He was a bank manager so his work seemed more demanding. When all these started he became less efficient and was forced to resign earlier than expected. It got to a stage when dad could not see clearly. He couldn’t help to notice this since he was a lover of newspapers. He was at the hospital for checkups and to possibly request for a lens which would aid his vision. It was even more shocking when he got to know thathis blood pressure was on the high side. I think this revelation worsened everything, caused a tensed atmosphere and brought up varied symptoms on a daily basis. On the 11th of December, 20014 we were given a scare mom was really panicking so were we. My dad’s eyes were wide opened, sweating profusely and complaining of something pounding in his chest ears and neck region. I have never anything like that in my life I was so scared we might lose him. We couldn’t even rush him to the hospital because of possible delay. Mommy called our family doctors in tears and he came around in a matter of minutes after the call. The doctor measured his BP using sphygmomanometer and it read 170/100. We were lucky to have dad back again with the help of the doctor perhaps with a limited life line. We were sure to put to proper monitoring his diets. The doctor had warned against the risk of too much intake of salt, red meat, alcohol and fatty foods. Daddy abstained from all these and mom made sure of that but this feeling of nervousness never stopped in dad. We decided to try out other possible means of helping dad overcome this even though the doctor said we could only help manage this condition. We did not mind whether it was traditional or otherwise mom just wanted dad back. I saw an article online around March this year which was a testimonial of a survivor of a similar case to that of my dad, I did not totally fall for it but I told mom anyway. She opted for it at once but did not tell dad about this innovation since we were not certain about its potency. We skeptically visited the link (http://evergreenhealthsolution.com.ng/hbp.html), put a call through for the natural supplements and were overwhelmed with the result we achieved shortly after. The doctor asked in disbelief what we had used on dad but mom concealed the truth since she feared any possible criticism from the doctor might not go well with her. As at 9th of November (2016) my dad’s BP already read 120/80. He is happy and healthy again and now hoping to rejuvenate his passion for hard work on agriculture this time. We might just have to get used to seeing dad whisk out of the house at early hours once again.

Health News. Nutritionist says boiling vegetables leads to massive nutrient loss

It is common nutritional advice to have five servings of fruits and vegetables daily in order to meet the body's vitamin requirements but you could be undoing any potential health benefits if you're not doing it right. Nutritionist Tracy Lesht says boiling vegetables can lead to a 50 percent nutrient loss thus depleting their benefits. She said that certain vegetables, namely those containing water-soluble vitamins, should never be boiled if you can avoid it.
That includes cabbage, spinach, kale, broccoli, spinach, beans, and peas.

The reason is that water-soluble vitamins dissolve in water - so if you boil vegetables containing these vitamins, you won't see much health benefit from them. As an alternative, don't cook them for too long if you must and use little water. She says: 'Minimise the cooking time and use small amounts of water with low heat to absorb the maximum amount of nutrients.'

Britain's national health service, the NHS agrees with her. It says:

'By cooking foods, especially boiling them, we lose some of these vitamins.
'The best way to keep as many of the water-soluble vitamins as possible is to steam or grill foods, rather than boil them, or to use the cooking water in soups or stews rather than pouring it away.' Lesht urged foodies not to get too worried about cooking technique.
'At the end of the day, your food needs to be palatable to you. It's more important to consume fruits and vegetables cooked and prepared the way you enjoy them than it is to be overly concerned with their bioavailability and nutrient loss due to cooking.
'In the grand scheme of things, eating a vegetable and only absorbing 50 per cent of its nutrients is still better than not eating the vegetable at all.'

Health news. Experts say people who live on a fruit diet are harming their health

Fruitarians as they are called live primarily on a diet of fruit and while they credit it with looking younger and healthier, experts aren't convinced.

U.S. First Lady-in-waiting Melania Trump, 46, though not a fruitarian, credits her slender figure to eating seven pieces of fruit a day while Steve Jobs, attributed his creativity to a fruitarian diet. Experts however argue that the diet’s high sugar content and absence of dairy and protein can cause serious health problems.

‘I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone,’ says dietitian Anna Daniels. ‘It can lead to malnutrition through deficiencies and the high fibre content can lead to stomach pains and Irritable  Bowel Syndrome symptoms. Replacing water with fruit juice is dangerous, as it can lead to very high blood sugar levels and could contribute to diabetes.

‘A fruitarian diet will be deficient in nutrients and vitamins essential for skin health. These include protein, calcium and fatty acids, which are required to build and repair skin and keep bones healthy.’
Nutritionist, Dr Zoe Harcombe said: ‘Fruits are effectively sugar bombs and sugar is ultimately ageing. Fruitarians benefit from what they’re not eating more than what they are eating .
‘They are not consuming white flour, alcohol or processed food. The one bad thing they are doing is living on fruit, which gives them insufficient essential fats and no complete protein.’
The effect of the extreme diet on children is not beneficial. Anna Daniels warns: ‘The risk of malnutrition in growing children on a fruitarian diet is especially high. They face stunted growth due to a lack of protein, anaemia through a lack of vitamin B and iron, and rickets due to a lack of dietary vitamin D and calcium.

‘There is also the risk of creating fussy eating habits.’

True secret of overcoming male infertility and secual weakness in a man

Most of us see child bearing as one of the major essence of life, of course I subscribe to this opinion it is only quite unfortunate that I was one of the unlucky ones of whom child bearing and raising was a mere fantasy. My experiences are not what I wish a reader of this but my testimony and liberation.

All along, I have had this great fear in me of not being able to reproduce. I have been troubled ever since I was a teenager this was because of the little size of my manhood. Funnily, friends had teased me on several occasions that they know that my manhood would be of a very healthy size since I am a very fit looking guy with a good height. It’s only shameful that I could not reveal to them, the tiny thing under my pants. I have really tried to get my penis enlarged honestly I would have given almost anything up just for it.  http://bit.ly/2fL9hJ4

While I was serving at Kwara state, an indigene once told me about a Fulani woman with herbs for hormone imbalance, quick ejaculation, penis enlargement and all possible erectile dysfunction related problems. I was excited when I heard of the penis enlargement but I did not tell him that was what I wanted. I only requested to see the woman on the note that I want to really satisfy my woman on bed.

I finally met the woman who seemed like a savior to me.

We couldn’t do much of verbal talking since I did not understand her language. It was more of sign communication. I demonstrated to her a little sized penis although, I was ashamed when she burst into laughter that seemed assuring that what I came for was minor. She brought some particles of dried leaves or so, then inserted a penis shaped rod in it and stirred for a while. Shortly, she added some few more particles which were finer. Then she called my friend in to explain the dosage. I was to use few spoons with a whole tin of milk at 12 hours interval for three days. I did so but purged a lot. I did not stop usage even though I could not go to my place of primary assignment because of my extreme running stomach. I lost weight already after day two and would always use a ruler to measure length of my penis. To cut the story short the herbs did not work but instead caused damage.

I was admitted at the hospital when I fell terribly sick. I opened up to the doctor so he ran some tests. I was diagnosed with almost all the terrible things you could think of. It felt as if my life was already finished when I was diagnosed with hyperglycemia (high blood sugar), varicocele (impaired testicles) and impaired sperm production which meant I had a very low sperm count. He gave me the shocker! When he said I might not be able to reproduce again since mine was a permanent damage. It wasn’t here to here this. I decided not to use protection on most occasions during sexual intercourse with my girl hoping to get her pregnant somehow but this never happened. When she insisted on protection and I declined on several occasions she would refuse to go on bed with me. I was eventually forced to open up to her. When she heard of this she felt much down casted than I was, she had hopped we would marry.

She cried a lot that day, but showed willingness to help out. She came around the fourth day or so and convinced me to check out what she read on this site http://bit.ly/2fL9hJ4 I had no choice since it was coming from her because I had vowed not to believe in friends again after my experience with the Fulani woman.

We visited the link and was blown away with the amazing assurances I got. I immediately tried the required out but then I was already passing out of service. Well, let me confess this to you I had my wedding two months after when we discovered that my girlfriend was pregnant already.

Cancer is our priority in health sector — FG

The Federal government has declared cancer a priority project in the health sector and initiated a planning process that would culminate in the transformation of the National Cancer Control Programme, NCCP, into a National Agency.

Disclosing this in Abuja, during the commemoration of the 2016 World Cancer Day, Minister of the Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole said the National Agency for Cancer Control would be a multidisciplinary centre involving all health care personnel, basic and social scientists including public health experts, to provide leadership and technical direction for cancer control in the country.

He said  the Agency would focus on policy formulation, advocacy and mobilization, Center of excellence for cancer prevention and care and Palliation.

“The Agency would drive a comprehensive cancer treatment, including palliative care, research and teaching whilst paying attention to the needs of the individual cancer patient.’’ he said.

Cancer control

Further, the Minister explained that the pivot of the cancer control would be health promotion and prevention from primary healthcare level, to achieve this, the ministry is working on strengthening primary healthcare system across the nation including building a formidable workforce To provide essential outreach services that will include health promotion, he said the “One PHC Per Ward Initiative” would also link up with secondary and tertiary care through strong referral systems.

In his remarks, the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Enahire Osagie, noted that over 60 percent of all cancer cases in Nigeria occur in women and are mainly due to breast and cervical cancers.

Keybarriers

Osagie said the key barriers to treatment of cancer in Nigeria include competing priorities for government attention, low number of skilled health care personnel, funding gaps, poor infrastructure and lack of awareness.

“Government plans to overcome these key challenges include the development of Public Private Partnerships strategies to address the funding gaps and manpower shortage”, he said.

In his welcome address, the Executive Director, Project Pink Blue, Runcie Chidebe, said the World Cancer Day 2016 marks the beginning of a new three – year campaign with the theme “We Can, I Can” that would explore how everyone as an individual or collectively would do to reduce the global burden of cancer.

Killer – Zika Fever : Mosquito–borne virus is potential death sentence

THIS is the season of  fevers. The menace of fevers is rocking the world. True, yellow fever is no longer a global threat, but malaria fever is still with us while  typhoid fever remains on the prowl . Sierra Leone is still at alert for Ebola fever and Saudi Arabia is wary of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome a.k.a MERS – a viral respiratory illness that is relatively new to humans.

Most people infected with MERS-CoV developed severe acute respiratory illness, including fever, cough, and shortness of breathe. It was first reported three years ago and the Saudi government is “very keen” on finding a vaccine since there is pressing need to control the spread of the MERS virus.zika

The Lassa fever epidemic,  currently running around in Nigeria,  also comes to mind.

Nigerians are not at ease because there is no  vaccine  against  the disease at  the moment; and  no experimental vaccine has completely protected non-human primates against a lethal challenge.

But right now, the world is not much bothered by MERS, Lassa fever or even Ebola, The world’s latest health scare is a seemingly minor illness that carries a killer wrapped inside – Zika, the mosquito-borne virus that is sweeping across Latin America in the form of a tropical fever, linked to neurological problems and a surge in microcephaly, a condition in which babies are born with abnormally small heads. The defect can cause brain damage and death.

The outbreak of Zika virus has led authorities in some countries to urge couples not to get pregnant, while the US Centers  for Disease Control, CDC, has warned pregnant women to avoid traveling to at least 25 affected countries.

On February 1, 2016, the World Health Organisation (WHO)  declared Zika virus a  public health emergency of international concern. Following an Emergency Committee Meeting  on Zika virus, convened under the International Health Regulations, 18 experts and advisers looked, in particular, at the strong association, in time and place, between infection with the Zika virus and a rise in detected cases of congenital malformations and neurological complications.

The experts agreed that a causal relationship between Zika infection during pregnancy and microcephaly is strongly suspected, though not yet scientifically proven, but all agreed on the urgent need to coordinate international efforts to investigate and understand this relationship better. The experts also considered patterns of recent spread and the broad geographical distribution of mosquito species that can transmit the virus. The lack of vaccines and rapid and reliable diagnostic tests, and the absence of population immunity in newly affected countries were cited as further causes for concern.

After a review of the evidence, the Committee advised that the recent cluster of microcephaly cases and other neurological disorders reported in Brazil, following a similar cluster in French Polynesia in 2014, constituted an “extraordinary event” and a public health threat to other parts of the world.

Director General, WHO, Dr Margaret Chan, in a statement, afterwards,  said: “I am now declaring that the recent cluster of microcephaly cases and other neurological disorders reported in Brazil, following a similar cluster in French Polynesia in 2014, constitutes a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

Chan said a coordinated international response is needed to improve surveillance, the detection of infections, congenital malformations, and neurological complications, to intensify the control of mosquito populations, and to expedite the development of diagnostic tests and vaccines to protect people at risk, especially during pregnancy.

Although the Committee found no public health justification for restrictions on travel or trade to prevent the spread of Zika virus, it noted that, at present, the most important protective measures are the control of mosquito populations and the prevention of mosquito bites in at-risk individuals, especially pregnant women.

The virus

What’s Zika? This is probably the million-dollar question. Sunday Vanguard  investigations revealed that the  virus was first identified in a  rhesus monkey specie in Africa in 1947. WHO  confirmed  that Zika is actually named after a forest in Uganda where the first infected rhesus monkeys were found. The virus then “jumped”, over time, to humans in Uganda and Tanzania in East Africa.

Hospital information says most of the time, Zika disease infection goes unnoticed. The symptoms are like a mild case of the flu — headache, muscle and joint pain, and mild fever — plus a rash and usually last two to seven days.

Zika is linked to  two serious complications: Neurological problems and birth defects in babies born to infected women. The main neurological complication is  Guillain-Barre syndrome, a disorder in which the immune system attacks the nervous system, causing weakness and sometimes paralysis.

Most patients recover, but the syndrome is sometimes deadly. Cases linked to Zika were first reported in Brazil and French Polynesia.

Microcephaly and other brain deformities in newborns have also been reported, particularly in Brazil.  Since the  Zika outbreak began, last year, microcephaly cases have surged. With no vaccine, or specific treatment, Zika has become a potential death sentence overnight.

‘No more pregnancy’

Recently, the  US Centers for Diseases Control issued a travel ban for pregnant women. Don’t travel to Brazil,  it warned. For women in Brazil,  Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador,  Jamaica  and at least 18 other Latin America and Caribbean countries, women have been advised to avoid pregnancy for the time being.

An American woman was  reportedly said to have given  birth to a baby with microcephaly after traveling to Brazil.

The Zika virus itself is considered a bit of a dark horse by scientists. A member of the   flaviviridae  family transmitted to humans by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, it is related to other pathogenic vector borne flaviviruses including Dengue , West-Nile and Japanese encephalitis viruses but prior to the last few months, produced a comparatively mild disease in humans.

The vector

Like dengue fever and chikungunya, two similar diseases, Zika is transmitted by the aedes mosquito species found in tropical and sub-tropical regions. The specific host of the Zika virus is the   aedes aegypti  mosquito. It has a number of aliases including  the yellow fever mosquito, tiger mosquito or stegomyia mosquito.  The vector host is well distributed in Africa, the surrounding tropics and subtropics, south eastern US, the Middle East, South East Asia, Pacific and Indian Islands and Northern Australia.  Sunday Vanguard  gathered that the first documented transmission of Zika virus, outside of its traditional endemic areas in Africa and Asia, was recorded in 2007, when it caused an outbreak on the island of Yap in the Pacific.

Today, Zika virus is considered an emerging infectious disease with the potential to spread to new areas where the aedes mosquito vector is present.

However, there is still no evidence of transmission Zika virus in Europe to date and imported cases are rare.

Entomological information provided by the European Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, ECDCP, shows that the aedes aegypti   is a relatively small insect with an aggressive biting habit. It is easily distinguished by its characteristic black and white pattern due to the presence of white/silver scale patches on a black background on the legs and other parts of the body.

Aedes aegypti  has a high biting and disease risk. It is a known vector of several viruses including yellow fever virus, dengue virus and chikungunya virus. Others are Japanese encephalitis, viral haemorrhagic fevers and Zika virus.

Over the past 25 years there has been an increase in distribution of this mosquito to every continent worldwide making it one of the most widespread mosquito species globally. The success of this invasive species has largely been due to globalisation. It thrives in densely populated areas which lack reliable water supplies, waste management and sanitation.

Historically, this mosquito has moved from continent to continent via ships, and this method of dispersal is thought to present the highest risk. It is even suggested that the mosquito evolved its domestic behaviour in West Africa and its widespread distribution and colonisation in the tropics led to the highly efficient inter-human transmission of viruses such as dengue. Sunday Vanguard  investigations show that  aedes aegypti prefers mammalian hosts and will preferentially feed on humans, even in the presence of alternative hosts. Historically, the mosquitoesi  were found in forested areas, using tree holes as aquatic habitats. But as they have adapted to more urban domestic habitats, they have exploited a wide range of artificial containers such as vases, water tanks and tyres that are often associated with human habitations.

The mosquito has also been found utilising underground aquatic habitats such as septic tanks and adapting to use both indoor and outdoor aquatic habitats in the same area. Adaptation to breeding outdoors may allow for increased population numbers and difficulty in implementation of control methods.

The insect is often not found further than 100m from human habitations. They prefer human habitations that provide resting and host-seeking possibilities and, as a result, will readily enter buildings.

Hope for a vaccine

How far away is a Zika virus vaccine? Experts say research efforts will focus on developing a vaccine for the mosquito-borne illness, but it will take time. However, scientists have quickly turned their attention to trying to develop a vaccine, but a widely available safe and effective Zika vaccine is not likely this year and   probably not in the next few years.

Two potential approaches have been mapped out to developing a Zika vaccine. The first is a DNA-based strategy similar to one employed in a vaccine for West Nile virus, in which a piece of the virus’s genetic structure is inserted into another harmless virus and used to create an immune response in the patient.

The second, more traditional approach would use a live attenuated vaccine in which the virus has been weakened to prompt immunity.

Last week, Genekam, a German biotechnology company, said it had created technology that can not only reveal the presence of Zika pathogens in a blood sample, but also shed light on the quantity in the patient’s blood. The new test can, therefore, definitely determine if a person is a carrier of the Zika virus, as only one in five people infected actually becomes ill, the media reports. Additionally, the test renders diagnostic results in real time, which is relatively quick for a virus of this kind. The test examines DNA and works with chemicals that react to the Zika virus only.

As the race to come up with a vaccine that could fight Zika virus hots up, scientists admit that it’s not going to be easy. Scientists from around the world have pledged to fast-track the research. U.S. National Institutes of Health, Brazil’s Butantan Institute and the Public Health Agency of Canada  have already started their research. Biotech firm, NewLink Genetics and Merck & Co, who are behind the successful Ebola vaccine, are also working on a possible solution. Large Pharmaceutical companies like Sanofi, GlaxoSmithKline and Japan’s Takeda pharmaceutical are also in the race to develop the Zika virus vaccine.

However, despite technological advancements, scientists confessed that there are many challenges to the development of a vaccine. The target profile is women who are pregnant or who are planning to get pregnant – which is about the highest bar there is for safety.

Last  week, Bharat Biotech Ltd., in India, claimed it  already had a possible Zika virus vaccine. It even said  it  actually had two.

It said it could  possibly make one million doses and that  it aimed  to provide help to  fellow BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) member-country, Brazil. But the vaccine will also need to undergo further animal trials, which could take some time.

Rage of viruses

In recent years, viruses have been emerging from nowhere. Outbreaks of killer-viruses like SARS, swine flu, and West Nile  have raised international fears. One other virus dominating the headlines is a new strain of bird flu (H7N9) in China. Detected last year, the virus transmits easily from birds to humans, killing about one in five people it infects.

Fears also centre around a novel coronavirus (NCoV), a SARS-like virus. The world’s fears of viruses is clear: Which one has the capacity to become an uncontrollable pandemic. In a world of global air travel, a deadly virus could sweep round the earth with frightening speed.

Viruses outnumber all other life forms on earth. Scientists have estimated that there are about 10 million times the number of stars in the universe.

A virus that kills more quickly than it can spread will die out before infecting a significant proportion of the population. A perpetual fear is that deadly viruses will mutate to develop person to person transmission, allowing rapid spread (rather than, for example, spreading to humans from an infected animal source). The WHO’s recent admission that the novel coronavirus is probably spreading from person to person made the news for this reason.

The creation of genetically modified viruses in the laboratory is believed to be increasing the potential of deadliness of viruses. An altered virus is probably one of the most dangerous viruses you can make. Resaerchers could inadvertently be tampering with the delicate balance of nature and putting the world at risk. No one really knows what the future holds for the battle against viruses. Their resilient nature makes eradication seem unlikely, so man will need to keep innovating.

Zika virus: We’re conducting tests on mosquitoes —FG

Mosquito

LAGOS — As part of preventive measures against possible outbreak of Zika virus, the Federal Government says it has put measures in place to ensure that the virus is not transmitted by mosquitoes in the country.

This is coming as the Director General of the World Health Organisation, WHO, Dr. Margaret Chan is convening an International Health Regulations Emergency Committee on Zika virus today in Geneva, Switzerland, to ascertain whether the Zika virus outbreak constitutes a public health emergency of international concern.

Meanwhile, German researchers say they have developed a diagnostic test that can accurately detect the Zika virus in humans. Previously, there was no way to diagnose the illness apart from appearance of the distinctive symptoms.

In a telephone chat with Vanguard, the Director-General of the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, Prof Abdulsalam Nasiru, said already the Federal Government has put in place mechanisms to stop the Zika virus from entering the country.

Part of the measures includes conducting epidemiological tests on mosquitoes to ensure they do not carry the virus.

According to him, as a follow up, there has been regular monitoring already and a meeting of stakeholders comprising experts on public health among others would be convene on Wednesday in Abuja.

Over the weekend, the Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole, issues a travel alert to pregnant women from Nigeria not to travel to Brazil and other Latin American countries.

Briefing the WHO Executive Board during its 138th session, Chan said the level of alarm as extremely high.  The Director General noted that WHO is generally worried about the rapidly evolving situation and decisions are expected to be taken at the meeting to step up international efforts to fight the threat.

The Zika virus has been tied to severe birth defects, including babies born with brain damage to infected mothers. There is no vaccine that can prevent the infection and very few tests available to detect it.

Worse still, people in most countries have never been exposed to the virus before, so there’s very little natural immunity to the virus in the general population.

The mosquito that carries the Zika virus, the Aedes aegypti mosquito, is the same mosquito that spreads the Chugwuniya fever and the yellow fever diseases, and is found in most parts of the world including Nigeria. A species of the same mosquito carries Dengue fever.

In recent times, public health officials around the world have expressed concern about the fast-spreading Zika virus

Speaking on the Zika threat, Assistant Director-General of the WHO, Dr. Bruce Aylward, said 3-4 million Zika infections in the Americas over the next 12 months.

In her contribution, Principal Deputy Director of the Centres for Diseases Control and Prevention, CDC, Dr. Anne Schuchat, noted that even though most people aren’t in any serious danger from Zika, the worrisome aspect to health officials, is that “increasing lines of evidence suggest that some women infected with Zika during their pregnancies may go on to deliver a baby with a serious brain injury.”

Since October 2015, Brazil has seen more than 4,000 cases of microcephaly, a rare birth defect that stunts the growth of a baby’s brain and head. Many children with microcephaly have some degree of mental disability, and the condition is linked to a shorter life span.

In a related development, German researchers say they have developed a diagnostic test that can accurately detect the Zika virus in humans.

Until now, the only way to determine if someone had the illness was to wait to see if the disease’s distinctive symptoms appeared.

The biotechnological company, Genekam, claims the technology can not only reveal the presence of Zika pathogens in a blood sample, but also shed light on the quantity in the patient’s blood.

The new test is said to be able to determine if a person is a carrier of the Zika virus, and renders diagnostic results in real time.

According to a virologist and co-developer of the innovation,  Sudhir Bhartia, the test examines DNA and works with chemicals that react to the Zika virus only.

The researcher also added that the test provides sufficient accuracy, as “similar pathogens like Dengue fever won’t show up in the results.

The technology which is cost effective however, has its limitations, as it can only be employed in specialized medical facilities and laboratories having the appropriate equipment and personnel with sufficient know-how.

Indications reveal that the first kits containing the new tests have already been sent to Brazil, where up to 1.5 million people may have been infected by the Zika virus.

Under normal circumstances, the test would go through a lengthy authorization phase. However, due to the emergency situation in South America, authorities have made an exception in this case.

BREAKING: Joy As Doctors Announce They Have Finally Found A ‘Functional’ Cure For HIV / AIDS

Barcelona researchers believe that blood transplants can rid the body of HIV.

Doctors in Barcelona, Spain, announced earlier this month that they believe they’ve found a cure for HIV, according to the Latin Post. But don’t hold your breath, it’s not going to be available overnight.

Similar to the report published by Harvard researchers, the Spanish research team hypothesize that a blood transplant from a donor with a genetic mutation could prevent HIV from entering cells and replicating.

The announcement is based on results of an experimental treatment given to a 37-year-old man who contracted HIV in 2009. The “Barcelona Patient” developed lymphoma in 2012. He received chemotherapy and a transplant of blood from an umbilical cord of a donor who had a genetic mutation that gave the donor a heightened resistance to HIV.

“We suggested a transplant of blood from an umbilical cord but from someone who had the mutation because we knew from ‘the Berlin patient’ that as well as [ending] the cancer, we could also eradicate HIV,” Rafael Duarte, the director of the Haematopoietic Transplant Programme at the Catalan Oncology Institute in Barcelona, explained to Spanish news site The Local.

People with the CCR5 Delta 35 genetic mutation that leaves them without CCR5 cellular receptors, which act like doorways to the cell. HIV uses CCR5 receptors to enter white cells for replication. This heightened resistance to HIV occurs in about 1 percent of the population.

The Spanish medical team sought to replicate the results of Timothy Brown, an HIV-positive man dubbed “the Berlin Patient,” who received an experimental bone marrow transplant from a donor with the mutation. Brown had leukemia and HIV but six years later shows no signs of the virus.

The treatment seemed to work, as the Barcelona Patient was HIV free after three months, but unfortunately died due to cancer. The development spurred Spain’s National Transplant Organization to back the world’s first clinical trials of umbilical cord blood transplants for HIV patients with blood cancers, according to the Latin Post. Javier Martínez, a virologist from the research foundation Irsicaixa, is quoted as saying that while their trials are aimed at helping HIV-positive cancer patients but it could “allow us to speculate about a cure for HIV.”

Ever Wondered What Happens to Your Body When You Eat an Avocado a Day?

You’ve probably heard the adage “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.” While it’s true that apples are extraordinarily good for you, what you really should be eating every day is an avocado.
This wonder fruit is so full of health benefits that you will be amazed why you’ve never made eating them a regular habit and if you are concerned about weight loss and keeping your metabolism high, the avocado can help in some very surprising ways. Here is what happens to your metabolism when you start a regular diet of avocados.

Your Liver Produces More Glutathione
If you eat an avocado a day, your liver will produce more of the antioxidant Glutathione, which is the number one antioxidant, but how it helps your metabolism is that it also contains magnesium which is a key factor in more than 300 metabolic processes.

You Get Monounsaturated Fats
Avocados are terrific because they provide you with more than 100 calories of monounsaturate  oleic acid, and those fats are used as slow burning energy which helps your metabolism. When you take in saturated fat, you don’t get any benefit because they are unlikely to be used to burn for energy and are stored instead.

You Get Omega-9 Fatty Acids
Even though an avocado has about 160 calories, they also contain omega-9 fats. In fact, avocados are one of the best sources on the planet for these fats, and they have been studies extensively over the past decade or so.
These omega-9 fatty acids have been shown in studies to reduce the levels of LDL cholesterol, while raising the levels of HDL, which is the good cholesterol. Also, omega-9 fats are good at absorbing vitamins and antioxidants from the foods that contain them so you get those as well.

You Get Satisfied
Besides the other benefits that have been discussed so far, avocados can also help you with controlling hunger, which obviously affects your metabolism and your weight loss. The way that avocados improve what nutrients you are getting from a meal helps you to control your hunger and lose weight faster. Plus, since they contain so much water they keep you hydrated which is also an important part of the metabolic process.

You Get Better Insulin Control
Another major factor in metabolism is the glucose levels in your body. Insulin is extremely powerful, removing any excess glucose so that you don’t suffer from serious problems.
If there is excess glucose it can be stored in the liver and in your muscle tissue, but after filling those areas up as much as possible, insulin removes the glucose to fat cells. This storage can lead to low blood sugar, which not only can lead to diabetes but also makes you want carbs, which is detrimental to your weight loss

GUYS SEE Ways To Prevent HIV Without Condom

As HIV becomes a growing threat around the world, people want access to information that can help them to avoid this potentially deadly disease.

Medical experts have indicated that co ndoms can be a good way to prevent an HIV infection, but there are other steps you can take to reduce your chances of contracting HIV.

#1:. Abstain

The most effective way to not contract HIV is to not have s’ex with anyone until you are prepared to get married. When the time comes, you and your significant other can get the tests done to determine your HIV status, and then make the informed decision that will affect the rest of your lives.

#2:. Be selective on your s’exual partners

When you find someone who you have strong feelings for, it is important to have an open discussion about HIV prior to having s’ex. If you are extremely selective about the partners you choose, then you can significantly reduce your chances of contracting HIV.

3:. Consider monogamy

One of the surest ways to prevent HIV if you want to remain s’exually active is to be monogamous with someone who is not HIV positive.

#4:. Use only sterile medical equipment

Whether you are giving yourself a shot of medication at home or getting an injection from a medical facility, always insist on making sure that the needle is sterile. Avoid previously used needles when you are injecting medication, or when you are getting medical treatment.

#5:. Insist on tested blood

If you ever need a blood transfusion, then insist on only using blood that has been tested for the HIV and AIDS viruses.

#6:. Get yourself tested

If you get yourself into the habit of being tested for HIV a couple of times a year, then it becomes easier to insist that your s’exual partners do the same. If you do decide to have s’ex with multiple partners throughout the year, then you should insist that they take the same steps you do in getting tested for HIV and having those results with them to show you. It seems extreme, but it is much better than the alternative.

#7:Get treated for HIV immediately

If you had s’ex with someone and start to feel flu-like symptoms soon afterwards, then get tested immediately. The newer HIV medications being used can actually help to stop the infection if it is caught soon enough. The sooner you get tested, the better your chances of stopping the infection.
