Kidnapping: Panic grips Delta royal fathers

IGP-Solomon-Arase

FEAR enveloped royal fathers in Delta State following the kidnapping, weekend, of the Odio-ologbo of Olomoro Kingdom in Isoko South Local Government Area,  HRM Josiah Aghaza I, 24 days after the king of Ubulu-Uku Kingdom in Aniocha South, Edward Ofulue III, was abducted and killed by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

However, abductors of the Olomoro monarch called the family on Friday night with his phone, demanding N50 million ransom. They switched off the phone after the call to obstruct tracking.

The Chair, Isoko South, Mr. Malik Ikpokpo, who spoke to Sunday Vanguard after a security meeting, in Oleh, yesterday morning, confirmed the demand for N50 ransom by the kidnappers.

Community leaders in Olomoro also held an emergency meeting to deliberate on how to secure freedom for their monarch.
Security agents are, however, on the trail of the kidnappers, who abandoned their car at Agbarha-Otor and moved  to a  hideout from where they contacted the family.

Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Celestina Kalu, said “no update yet” when this paper called her yesterday afternoon.

Our findings showed that traditional rulers in the state, who met last Thursday, in  Asaba, the state capital,    to deliberate on the kidnap and murder of  Ofulue III, were alarmed when, barely 24 hours later, kidnappers abducted  Aghaza I.

Some of them told Sunday Vanguard that they did  not have adequate security and wondered whether kidnappers in  Delta had  made traditional rulers their targets.

A source said: “The royal fathers are human beings too, they are afraid and a number of them have beefed up their security with more vigilante men around them. Some have called the police to deploy  officers to them and also adjusted their movements.”

One of the royal fathers said: “Most of us that you see do not even have money to buy fuel for our vehicles, let alone pay for security. For some of us, who have some policemen guarding us, it is not easy. When I get my monthly stipend, pay the policemen, local vigilante, there is nothing left even for my domestic staff.”

The parmount ruler of Siembiri Kingdom, Burutu local government rea, HRM Charles Ayemi-Botu and traditional ruler of Akugbene Mein Kingdom, Bomadi local government, HRM S.P. Luke-Kalanama VIII, who spoke our reporters, described the situation as worrisome to the monarchs.

The Okowa agenda to ‘leapfrog’ education

Worried by the poor education standard in the country, and Delta State in particular, the state government, last week, held a two-day summit to find lasting solution to the problems faced in the sector.
Education, key to economic, political and social development of any society, has been in a poor state, resulting in the turning out of half baked graduates from the country’s primary, secondary and tertiary institutions.

The two-day summit, held under the theme, ‘Leapfrogging Education in Delta State’, attracted several eminent persons, including Chief Afe Babalola and Emeritus Prof. Pai Obanya, who addressed some of the key issues responsible for the dwindling standard of education, especially in Delta.

And the state, in a proactive step, included, in its 2016 Budget, the establishment of a Teachers Professional Development Centre for in-service training, in an effort to build the capacity of those in the educational sector. Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, however, expressed concern over the continued request for the establishment of more tertiary institutions in the state.

The governor, who raised the issue during the question and answer session at the summit, asked  know how best to go on the matter as funding the existing ones was already a big challenge in government’s determination to providing the best education for the people.

He informed the  summit that Delta presently grapples with a university with three campuses, seven polytechnics and three colleges of education and yet more requests were being made by communities  for higher institutions.

Okowa noted that one determining factor in the establishment of the three campuses of Delta State University in Abraka, Oleh and Anwai as well as the first three polytechnics at Oghara, Ozoro and Ogwashi-Uku was senatorial district representation.

He stated that the people were moving in the direction of state government establishing a higher institution in each of the 25 local governments, maintaining that the way the requests were being made, each ward in the state would soon be asking for at least one higher institution sited there.

The governor pointed out the financial burden already faced by government to run the existing institutions in the state led to the education summit to find the way forward.

Most of the participants said no to the establishment of more higher institutions in Delta.

They maintained that what is most required now was  for government to ensure quality in the existing ones, stressing the need for urgent revolution in the education sector.

The summit participants stated that right and enabling environment must be created to leapfrog education in Delta. The Chairman of the occasion, Chief Afe Babalola, in his remarks, said: “The state government must be congratulated for identifying the need to set up an education summit. This is quite understandable as no right thinking Nigerian would deny the fact that there is urgent need for a revolution in our education system that would bring about quality and functional education having regard to the ever growing number of unemployable and unemployed graduates, the poor quality of teachers, cases of fake certificates, the rising list of illegal institutions, strikes and the unprofessional attitude of some teachers to education etc.

“The aim of education at any level and more importantly at the University level is to improve learning and also to mould character. A society which is interested in and concentrates only on learning at the expense of character is one that is bound to falter with time.

“As a matter of fact, character itself aids and accentuates learning whilst learning on its own is empty without character. It is for this reason that University certificates are issued only to persons who have been found deserving of it in terms of learning and character. This is a carryover from ancient times when the first universities were established by religious organizations or orders. At that time much emphasis was placed on morals”.

Professor Obayan, in his keynote address, said: “Education as a never-ending process has a vertical as well as a horizontal dimension. On the horizontal axis, we see various modes for the aquisition of learning not only co-existing but in fact coalescing. Of the four modes of acquiring/promoting education listed, only one belongs to the realm of the formal.

“On the vertical axis, as the figure illustrates, formal education goes on from early childhood development, through primary and secondary to the tertiary level. In all natural conditions, non-formal equivalents of early childhood, primary and secondary education also exists. In order words, non-formal education is not simply for the basic life skills required for the basic level of education. It should also be available and accessible for persons in a variety of evolving life circumstances, in a variety of forms, for a variety of learning needs throughout life”.

The Chairman of the Summit Planning Committee, Prof Patrick Muoboghare, said “the ?summit is not about who is wrong but about what is wrong” and insisted that funding was critical to education.

He said inadequate funding has created anxiety for school heads “such that many have resorted to unconventional practices to make the system run”.

In his paper, a former Vice Chancellor of the Delta State University, Prof John Enaowho, advocated  the scrapping of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, and the National Universities Commission, NUC.

Enaowho held that both establishments have outlived their usefulness. In the lecture, entitled, ‘Fiscal Planning and Development in Nigeria Education: The Paradox of Autonomy and Dependence’, the former VC decried that, despite the supervisory role of JAMB and the NUC, no Nigerian university has made the list of the 100 universities in the world.

Enaowho, a two-time Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Port-Harcourt, argued that accreditation of courses in tertiary institutions should be done by professional bodies in the respective disciplines such as the Council for Legal Education, the Nigerian Medical and Dental Council and the Council for the regulation of engineering rather than the NUC which he maintained should be scrapped.

He called for the removal of education from the purview of the Federal Government by decentralizing the educational sector in line with true federalism, urging the Federal Government to focus on other sectors such as defense, aviation and works. He insisted that it should leave education to states as was obtainable in foreign countries.“While noting that funding was the major challenge in education sector from primary to tertiary levels, Enaowho added: “Some level of charges should be introduced because the present day education cannot be totally free of tuition”.“The professor disclosed that Nigerians spend billions on Naira for their children’s fees abroad and in private universities but were not willing to pay fees in government owned tertiary institutions.

In another lecture, entitled, ‘Community and Parental Involvement in the Formal Education of the Child’, Prof Cecilia Otete Okobiah said communities have abandoned their pivotal role in the education of the child even as she lambasted some parents for not paying adequate attention to sound upbringing of their children.“On how government could leapfrog education in the state, the university don charged the state government to revamp the existing educational structures to ensure they play their role effectively among others.

Mystery-Woman delivered of first born from four-year-old pregnancy(Photo)

There was shock and amazement in Ikugbomire in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area, Ogun State, on Wednesday as a woman was delivered of a baby from a pregnancy she had carried for four years. People trooped to Alayo Vantage Hospital from far and near for a glimpse of the miracle baby.

Before she was delivered of the baby, the happy mother had become the butt of taunts and ridicule in the community, particularly after a scan conducted on her protruding tummy indicated that all she had in it was fibroid.

The arrival of the baby therefore marked the end of years of anxiety for 33-year-old Oluwabunmi and her 42-year-old husband, Bankole Ogidan.

According to her husband, Bankole Ogidan, their wedding took place on August 27, 2011.
“We were full of hope about having children and raising a complete family. But we had to wait till August 2013 before she got pregnant exactly two years after,” he said.

“We went for pregnancy test and it was confirmed positive. A few days after, my wife complained that she was feeling pains in her womb. We went to a midwife who told us that the pain was not a problem; that the pregnancy was intact. I was not satisfied, so I took her to another hospital (name withheld) where we did a scan but the doctor said he didn’t see any pregnancy. The doctor said there had been a miscarriage. I asked him that shouldn’t there be an outflow of blood if she had a miscarriage? The doctor said yes. I told him that we had not witnessed anything like that and he was shocked.

Scared by the doctor’s pronouncement, Bankole ran to the pastor of his church, Prophet Emmanuel Ogbara, who assured him that God had told him the pregnancy was intact. A couple of weeks later, Ogidan went back with his wife to the hospital but they were told that what she had in her womb was fibroid. They left for the General Hospital, Gbagada, where they were asked to see a gynaecologist. Again, the gynaecologist told them that what he saw in Oluwabunmi’s stomach was multiple fibroid with no chance of conception.

“All this while, my wife’s menstruation had ceased,” Bankole said. “It was only once after the pregnancy was sighted that we observed that little blood came out but stopped almost immediately. We left there for the Government Hospital in Owode, Ogun State.

“Thereafter, we returned for a scan session. The gynaecologist said there were three sets of fibroid where the baby ought to be, but that the way my wife looked, she appeared like a woman who was ready for delivery. He said he would act fast and do an x-ray that would reveal more. That was on March 25, 2014.“We did the x-ray but we were told that though they believed in God, from all medical indications, there was no more pregnancy in the womb. They said the uterus was elongated, blocked with a concentration of urine fibroid and the white fallopian tube was outlined. They concluded that it was fibroid. I asked if she could get pregnant and they said no.”

Meanwhile, Oluwabunmi’s stomach had protruded as if she was due for delivery. People whispered wherever she passed in the neighbourhood and her story was used for jokes. Bankole said he could not even think of sleeping with his wife because of the delicate nature of her condition all through the period.

“There was pressure from all corners—family, friends and well-wishers—who all had their suggestions as to the solution. Some said we were hearing wrongly from God,” he said.

Asked if he was not afraid that his wife would die in the process of waiting for a baby, he said:
“I did not worry about death at all. I was only more inspired to wait on God. As a matter of fact, we stopped going for medical opinion. As far as we were concerned, they had no good news for us, so we resorted to our church and prayer.

“On the 10th of September, 2015, my wife became terribly ill with signs of labour. I had to look for any hospital in sight because her condition was bad. That was how we got to this hospital.

“After giving her the initial treatment, we were told to go for another scan. To the glory of God, the doctor here said he had seen a baby; that my wife was carrying four months pregnancy.”

But the mystery again was how the pregnancy could be four months old when he was not making love to his wife, and his wife’s protruding stomach was there for all to see?

“At the church, the prophet confirmed again that the child had all along been there; only that scan could not pick it. So the hospital continued to nurture the baby for antenatal. But here again, they still saw fibroid in the womb. But to the glory of God 27th January this year, our baby finally arrived,” Bankole said.

But that was not all. After some time, the baby was said to have “got lost” in the womb.
The hospital’s matron said:

“We had to do an operation. When we did, we found that contrary to scan reports, we met a different thing in the womb. It was a sac with pus inside. It was not fibroid. And looking inside, we didn’t see any baby. But I remembered that I used to hear sound inside Mrs Ogidan’s womb, so the doctor searched further; the baby was hidden in the uterus.

“We thank God. It’s a miracle. The sac was so big that it swallowed up the uterus where the baby was. The sac was so big that the uterus could not be easily found. The doctor said he had never seen such a thing before.”

According to Dr Sam Akinyemi, a consultant on naturopathic gynaecologist,

“This is an abnormal medical record. But nothing is impossible in this world. All homo sapiens must take note of that.
“It is the joy of every pregnant woman that at 40 weeks or before then, the woman must fall into labour. When it does not happen, it becomes a major concern to the physician and the patient herself.

“In natural medical gynaecology, we have had cases of that nature. It can be the result of retardation in hormonal production in the pregnant patient or mother. And metaphysically, nature won’t seize to amaze us in its power.”

Pastor nabbed with stolen vehicle says-I thought my SUV was a blessing

A 32-year-old Presbyterian pastor from Umuahia, Abia State, Rev. Titus Onwuchekwa has been arrested for buying a 2005 edition of Mitsubishi Pajero for just N350,000.
Paraded alongside two notorious stolen car dealers by the police during the week,he explained that he thought God had brought a blessing his way.

Onwuchekwa was paraded with the car dealers, 32-year-old Felix Osas, who sold the vehicle and 32-year-old Ndibe Samuel.

Ordinarily, a used 2005 edition of Mitsubishi Pajero is sold for between N1.4m and N1.8m but when Osas presented himself as the seller, he told Onwuchekwa that he could give up the vehicle for N500,000,Punch reports..

Onwuchekwa, who is popularly called ‘My father, my father’ in his church circles in Umuahia, said he had come to Lagos to attend a Christian programme when he sighted the 2005 Mitsubishi Pajero in Alaba area of Ojo, Lagos and he dialled the number of the seller pasted on the car.
“He gave me the price of N500,000 but I told him that I could only afford N350,000 and after we haggled a little, he agreed to sell the car. He said he would sow the car as a seed into my life for that amount provided I pray for him regularly.

“He said he needed regular prayers and I paid him N350,000 with a promise that anytime he needed prayer, he could call me and I would always pray for him.”
When asked if the cheap price of the vehicle did not raise his suspicion at all during the transaction, Onwuchekwa said he believed it was indeed a blessing that had come his way.
“I even went home to share the testimony of how I bought the vehicle,” he said.
What about the vehicle particulars and the Customs papers presented to him, Onwuchekwa said they all bore the names of Osas, which was what doused every suspicion he had.
But these are not enough to exonerate Onwuchekwa who continued to maintain his innocence.
Osas explained that few weeks after Onwuchekwa bought the Pajero, he contacted him again and asked to buy a 2001 Toyota Camry for N250,000, a vehicle which under a normal circumstance, he would have sold for at least N900,000.

This proved to be the nail on the coffin for Rev. Onwuchekwa as the police said he must have known he was buying a stolen vehicle if he did not mind coming back for a second car despite the suspicious price of the vehicles.

Osas, who runs Happy Home Motors, was all smiles as he narrated how Onwuchekwa fell victim of his criminal trade.

“I don’t think he actually knew that he was buying a stolen vehicle. If he did not come back for more, the police would not have arrested him along with us. I don’t steal these vehicles myself.
“In fact, I don’t know where they came from. I got them from one of my friends, who told me to re-register them in my name. When I asked him where he got them, he confided in me that they were stolen.
“I bought the Pajero I sold to the Pastor for N300,000. I have only bought two vehicles from him before. I also bought the Camry from my friend for N300,000. It is the same one the pastor wanted to buy for N250,000.”
Osas said he had been selling vehicles for seven years after he realised that his initial business as a mechanic was not yielding profit as he wanted.
The young man did not show any remorse as he explained that it was the business he had been using to feed his family.

“I learnt car sales from my uncle and decided to establish a business of my own seven years ago. I actually did not set out to start selling stolen vehicles. It just happened that the prices were too cheap for me to avoid it.”
Samuel on the other hand, said he was not a stolen car dealer. He explained that he simply bought a vehicle from his in-law, which turned out to be a stolen vehicle.
“He told me that the 2001 model was fairly used and I bought it for N700,000. All the documents bear his name, so I did not suspect it might have been stolen. I am just a medicine store owner, not a criminal,” he said.

Girl Without Limbs Receives Help From Kano State Government [Photos]

Respite came today (Friday), for Rahma Haruna, a limbless 19-year old girl of Lahadin Makole in Dawakin Kudu local government area of Kano state when the state Commissioner for Women Affair, Barr. Zubaida Damakka Abubakar, presented empowerment to her family.

Rahma, who has no functional limbs but tiny appendages in the position of arms and legs, is being moved about in a synthetic washbasin by a young cousin, to beg for alms in Kano city, about 26 kilometers from her village. The earnings help in sustaining the family of four.

Her father, Haruna Muhammad said her challenge started when she was 6 months old and largely due to poverty, he could not take her for specialized medical attention. He had sold his farm and personal belongings but no progress was recorded in her treatment. At last, he resigned to the sad fate, which many people in his community seem to believe, that her condition is the handiwork of evil spirits.

While presenting the donation of empowerment items to the family, the Commissioner of Women Affairs, Barr. Zubaida Damakka said the state government is touched by the condition of the girl stressing that the government would do all it could to see that Rahma does not feel forsaken.

Items donated to the girl’s mother to start a business include 10 cartons of noodles, 2 bags of detergent, 10 cartons of biscuits, 2 bags of semovita, a bag of rice, a sack of soya bean, 2 gallons of cooking oil 25 liters each and the sum of twenty thousand naira. See photos below.

I don’t know how to explain this but I will try. The woman sitting and backing the camera is said to be a mentally unstable woman. The people gathered around her believe she gives lucky numbers for betting games as a few have supposedly testified. So they take their bets to her for her to help them pick a lucky number. That’s how the eye witness who sent in the photo explained to me.

Pipeline Vandalism: I Have No Issues With Tompolo, Says Ayiri

Itsekiri leader and chair, Itsekiri Regional Devlopment Council (IRDC), Warri, Delta State, Chief Ayiri Emami, says he has no issues with former leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, also known as Tompolo.

“I must also note that no amount of blackmail by pockets of sponsored persons from Gbaramatu or threat to my life will intimidate me,” he told Saturday Vanguard over the phone, while reacting to the request by an Ijaw group to the Olu of Warri, HRM Ikenwoli I, to call him to order.

“It amazes me how sometimes some group of persons make statements as if they have monopoly of violence, mistaking Nigeria to be a banana republic.

“The President Muhammadu Buhari administration has shown the capacity to crush any form of insurrection, sabotage and lawlessness as experienced in the battle against Shii’tes , IPOB and Boko Haram. As what obtains anywhere in the world and even in Nigeria in the case of local vigilantes assisting the military with intelligence, I have every right to offer intelligence to the military whenever called upon.

“Maybe those who criticized my noble assistance to the military when the massive economic sabotage was carried out for three days through the bombing of vital crude and gas pipelines located in Itsekiri host communities, Warri South West Local Government Area, which led to the loss of 600 megawatts of electricity. “Shutting down of Kaduna as well as Port-Harcourt Refineries and the loss of billions of naira to our economy have forgotten that I was once the chairman of Delta Waterways Security Committee and current chairman of Chevron established Itsekiri Regional Development Committee, IRDC,” he said.

“Criminality has nothing to do with ethnic or personal interest and I do not need to be an appointee of the Federal or Delta State Government to contribute my quota to the fight against economic sabotage.” “I must stress that my position against bombing of pipelines will not cause any crisis between Ijaw and Itsekiri, so nobody should hide criminality under the guise of blackmailing Chief Ayirimi Emami.

“If persons perceived to be loyal to me were responsible for the recent bombing of pipelines, I am sure by now, it would have been exposed,” he added.

“Nigerians are now too wise to be deceived and I will not be deterred in my responsibility towards this great nation by contributing my quota towards protecting our national assets no matter the odds.”

I Found Myself In PDP By Accident – Bafarawa

A former Governor of Sokoto State and one time presidential candidate on the platform of the defunct Democratic Peoples Party, DPP, Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa, has said his joining the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, was by accident.

Bafarawa, a founding member of the All Progressives Congress, APC, joined PDP following some disagreements with the national leadership of the party over control of party structures in the seat of the Caliphate.

Speaking in an interview yesterday, the former governor, however, said he had no regrets for the decision despite finding himself in the opposition at the moment.

Narrating his journey to the PDP, Bafarawa said:

“I found myself in PDP by accident. What I mean by accident is that I was part and parcel of the APC. I am a founding member of the APC. I was forced to leave APC because of corruption in politics in my state when PDP governors defected to the APC. Corruption came into the system along the formation of the party when they said that the PDP governors were going to join APC and I happened to be a victim. We were forced to hand over the party to my governor, who was a PDP member. So my followers insisted we must remain in PDP and I had to work with them”.

He also claimed former President Goodluck Jonathan found it hard to believe when it was brought to his notice that he (Bafarawa) had joined the PDP.

“He could not believe that because during the days of Obasanjo, I had a lot of pressure to join the PDP but I refused”, he added.

On how long he intends to be in PDP, former Governor Bafarawa said for as long as it remains convenient, adding that there is no difference between the opposition and governing party in the country.

“The APC is the same with PDP. I used to call them PDP 1 and PDP 2 because almost many of the people in PDP are now in APC and vice versa. For instance, the Number 2 man in PDP who ruled this country for eight years as a vice president is now in APC. If you count all the governors in APC, most of them were at one time or the other were in PDP. You can say so of at least two National Chairmen of PDP now in APC”, he said.

EFCC Will Go After Jonathan If… – Lai Mohammed

Former President Goodluck Jonathan is not immune from prosecution in the arms deal scandal if he has questions to answer, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed has said.

Mohammed said this at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife while delivering the Faculty of Art Distinguished Guest Lecture with the theme “Nexus between Corruption and Under-development of the Nigeria State” on Friday.

According to the Minister, the anti-graft agencies would probe the former president if need be, maintaining that the anti-graft war of President Muhammadu Buhari was aimed at sanitizing the nation.

Fielding questions from journalists on why Jonathan has not been probed in spite of the revelation of corrupt practices under his watch, Mr. Mohammed said the Presidency would not dictate to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on who to probe and when.

“The Presidency does not micro-manage the anti-graft agencies and the presidency does not decide who to be probed at any point in time. The anti-graft agency will probe him if they feel that he has questions to answer and they would do their job at the appropriate time”, he said.

The Minister also said: “If you know the figures of the money stolen by some corrupt individuals, you would be surprised and you would be compelled to join the war against corruption. You can imagine, if one-third of the money stolen could be recovered, it would make significant impact on the education, health, socio-infrastructure including road constructions”.

Mr. Mohammed also lampooned some Nigerians for using the media to cast aspersions on President Buhari in his fight against corruption, lamenting that the nation had lost over $400 billion to corruption in the oil sector alone.

“Let us look at instances of corruption in the various sectors. In the Health sector, for example, remember the N1.9 billion Special Intervention Ebola Fund Scandal, the $29 million for Vaccine Grants Scam and the N300 million Unspent Health Budget scam.

“In the area of security, recall that a former Inspector General of Police is alleged to have acquired assets totaling $150 million, including money stashed in banks and shares in blue chip companies”, Mohammed said.

Nigerian Army Arrests Wanted Boko Haram Suspect In Delta

A middle-aged man suspected to be a member of the Boko Haram sect has been arrested by officers of the 19 Battalion of Nigerian Army in Sapele, Delta State.

The suspect, Bukar Abacha, was arrested shortly after he arrived the popular Hausa quarters in Sapele.

A senior army officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said on Thursday that a member of the Arewa community gave the information to “Operation Pulo Shield”.

The Borno-state born suspect was, thereafter, handed over to the Army Headquarters in Abuja for further interrogation, the senior officer said.

The officer said that the suspect was on the wanted list of the army.

He said that a sensitisation exercise tagged “show of force confidence building patrol” had been inaugurated.

“The exercise is aimed at disarming all acts of criminalities such as, kidnapping, pipeline vandalism, illegal oil bunkering and killing of innocent citizens in the area.

“Before the arrest, community leaders informed us that the suspect was looking strange, psychologically imbalance and uncomfortable in their midst that called for his doubt as one of them”, he said.

The officer urged the people to give the army necessary intelligent information that would assist to effectively stamp out crime in the society.

He urged residents to report people with questionable character or strange movement of persons in their domains.

Okowa’s economic policies‘ll benefit Deltans- Odogwu

ABUJA- FOLLOWING the economic policies formulated by Delta State Governor, Sen Ifeanyi Okowa, a grassroots politician, Hon Tam Odogwu, has expressed hope that Deltans will benefit from them and their living standard enhanced.

Odogwu made this assertion while appraising effort made by the Okowa led administration in Delta State to make life meaningful for the people, which he highlighted some key economic programmes for the grassroots people, which he stated that these policies were capable of tackling the challenges the people currently contends with.

He said: “We at the grassroots are very happy with the pragmatic steps taken by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to positively impact on the rural populace with meaningful economic policies and Deltans will benefit immensely. We at the grassroots are in support of these programmes and pray for successful implementation.

“The SMART economics policy is a step in the right direction that is result orientated and will help tackle the economic challenges in Delta State. The agenda is currently engaging a lot of youths through the Skill Training and Entrepreneurship Programme, STEP.

“We also commend the Governor and his team of administrators under STEP to empower 322 trainees with starter packs for small scale business after three months training under this programme on vocational skill, entrepreneurship, tiling, event management and decoration, plastics, and interlocking.

“And the government talking about another second badge to receive their empowerment next week, and all these is to train and also for trainees to create jobs for other young people in the state, and drastically reduce unemployment.

“Also, take a look on the Youth Agricultural Entrepreneurship Programme, YAGEP, in fact, it is a visionary economic policy that will transform the agricultural sector in the State, and that will curb the menace of unemployment in the State. Another commendable economic policy is the State Employment and Expenditure For Results, SEEFOR, which is also playing a supplementary role in the SMART agenda.”

However, Odogwu called on Deltans to see themselves as stakeholders in the government and should come up with useful suggestions and also criticisms that will contribute to the development of the state. He also urged some persons in the political class in the State not to be antagonistic and hostile to government policies and destructive in their action against their perceived enemies in government.

He said such attitude will not help the peace and development of the State, rather should be politically matured and disciplined to add value to what the government is doing as Delta belongs to all sons and daughters of the State.

N-Delta militancy fuelled by non-clean up of Ogoniland —Buhari

Ogoni land and President Buhari

ABUJA—President Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday, in Nairobi, Kenya, said that non-clean up of oil spillages in the Niger Delta especially in Ogoniland, was responsible for the militancy the region witnessed in times past.

The president consequently vowed to clean up the land by implementing the United Nations Environmental Programme, UNEP’s recommendations to save the land.

President Buhari made the promise during a visit to the United Nations Office in the Kenyan capital.

He also appealed for more support from the United Nations in the clean up of the region.

He said: “When I came into office on May 29, 2015, one of the first tasks I carried out was to authorise the implementation of the recommendations of the UNEP report for the clean-up of Ogoniland.

“The devastation caused by oil spillage has destroyed many lives and livelihoods and is clearly one of the reasons many people in that region lost faith in government and resorted to the many criminal activities we are seeing in the region today.

“The action our government took to implement UNEP’s recommendations has given the indigenes of the region hope that there are better days ahead. Let me, therefore, express appreciation on behalf of the Government of Nigeria to UNEP and other development partners for their cooperation and support on this very delicate matter and also request for their continued support as we implement the recommendations and transform the fortunes of the region.”

President  Buhari also applauded the outcome of the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, UNFCCC,  held in Paris, France, in December last year.

He  called for rapid urbanization as the world population increases.

Messi’s fan has the star’s actual signature tattooed into his back alongside huge tattoo

One of Lionel Messi’s fans has gone to extreme lengths to show his admiration for the Barcelona player. He got a tattoo of the player poised in his signature celebration, on his back. He was then lucky to meet his idol and Messi was happy to oblige, offering his signature to be permanently added to the back tattoo of his image. He signed the fan’s back with a marker which the fan then took to a tattoo parlour to make it permanent. See the result below:

Saraki responds to letter by Obasanjo

Senate President Bukola Saraki, has responded to a letter from former President Olusegun Obasanjo, to him and Speaker of the House of Representative Yakubu Dogara in which the former president condemned the leadership of the National Assembly for planning to buy more cars. Saraki in his reply which was released today January 28th, said members of the 8th Senate are committed to good governance, transparency and accountability and will be responsive to the current economic realities of the country. Read full text of his response below:

Yesterday, I acknowledged that I received a letter from former President Olusegun Obasanjo in which he called the attention of the National Assembly to some issues.

I will want to assure President Obasanjo that the leadership and membership of the 8th Senate are committed to good governance, transparency, accountability, due process and responsiveness to the economic reality of our nation. It is for this reason that the legislative chamber has introduced bold and progressive reforms in the management of the finances of the National Assembly.

This is of even greater importance during a tough fiscal period for our country. Like i said during my closing address at the plenary after our debate on the 2016 Budget, the Senate must lead by example in terms of our own funding, budgets and accountability – showing, beyond doubt, value for money. I have canvassed that we must lay bare the budget of the Senate, nay the National Assembly and its affiliated institutions.

I equally canvassed the need to strengthen the capacity of the legislative institution to carry our effective oversight of the executive arm so that we can ensure the budget leads to the realization of the policy objectives of the Buhari Administration. Again, let me reiterate my position in the speech I made this morning on the need for us to work towards blocking all areas of revenue leakages while also strengthening the anti-corruption agencies so that the little resources that are now available will serve the interest of the overwhelming majority.

As a former President and a father of the nation that we all hold in high esteem , I intend to reply the letter and outline the actions the Senate is taking to address his concerns.

In conclusion, I appreciate President Obasanjo for his consistent role in always reminding those of us in government about our responsibilities to the general public and offering timely advise where necessary.

Signed
Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki

Ibori Replies Attorney-General: “There Is No Ibori Loot Anywhere”

Read the press statement below…
Chief James Onanefe Ibori’s Media Office was shocked to read in the newspapers of Wednesday January 27, 2016, that the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr. Abubakar Malami, said the Federal Government was priming itself to recover the sum of 6.9m British Pounds Sterling described as “Ibori loot”.
In a press statement, Mr. Tony Eluemunr, Ibori’s Media Assistant said ‘’there is no Ibori loot anywhere in the world.

Such money, whether in British pounds, American dollars or the Nigerian Naira just does not exist. This is because the Ibori London trial is not yet over. It is an incontrovertible fact that the confiscation hearing has not started at all, and remains months away into the future. This makes it disappointing that a high official of State such as the Attorney-General may have been misled into believing that an Ibori loot not only exists anywhere, but he even put a figure (6.9 million pounds) to it.

Mr. Eluemunor continued: “With all due respect to the Minister and the President Muhammadu Buhari administration, it is curious that such a misleading statement could have come less than a week that dozens of well-respected foreign media organisations including the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), The Times of London, The Guardian of London, and a host of Nigerian news outlets reported that the case against Ibori and his associates have become shaky as some operatives of the London Metropolitan Police have been accused of bribery and corruption in the course of their investigations. Thus at the Thursday January 21, 2016 hearing the prosecution was forced to withdraw its case against one of Ibori’s counsels, Mr. Bradesh Gohil. It had charged Gohil of leaking fabricated documents to media organisations and Members of (British) Parliament, but Gohil turned the case against the Police, accusing it of misleading the court with tainted evidence from corrupt operatives and of withholding key documents which could have proved police corruption.

The New Indian Express of Monday 25 January 2016 ventured further than the Times to report that Gohil, who was freed from jail last year, may now challenge his previous conviction, just as Ibori or any of his associates already convicted may also decide to do.

In representations to the judge, Stephen Kamlish, Gohil’s defence team leader accused the Crown Prosecution Service of “positively misleading the court and the parties as part of their deliberate cover-up of discloseable material”.

In response, the Judge said, “The crown has offered no evidence for one or both of the following reasons. One, that the allegations of corruption made by Mr Gohil are true, and not false. The second is that the crown has suppressed material both in this court and in other proceedings, including the trial of Ibori”. Then he said in words that must be sweet music to Ibori’s ears; “The crown offering no evidence can only mean the crown is not prepared themselves to explain their decision, either for the abuse of the court in bad faith or for the police corruption. In those circumstances, it is our duty to our client to raise these matters and this brings into question the safety of these (past) convictions.” This means all the past convictions could be challenged afresh.

The New Indian Express continued; “A Met police intelligence report seen by the paper suggests an RISC employee telephoned a police officer working on the Ibori investigation in 2007 and allegedly told him his inquiries were “on the right track”. Separate documents shown to Gohil’s defence team are said to reveal the existence of 19 cash deposits into the same officer’s bank account. The Crown Prosecution had allegedly denied the existence of the documents”. However, it is on record that in the run up to the hearings, Ms Wass was directly accused by Gohil’s representative, Mr. Stephen Kamlish, of lying to the Court of Appeal and also lying to His Honour at the Southwark Court and disobeying his order for the Crown to disclose evidence in their possession which include the bank statements of Detective Constable John McDonald to the Defence before the start of the trial.

Eluemunor said that he assumed that the Minister may have been misquoted and so did not issue a rebuttal immediately. It was only when he failed to retract the statement after 24 hours that he decided to give Nigerians (including the Minister) the true perspective about the Ibori London trial and state categorically that the so called “Ibori Loot” Mr. Abubakar Malami saw as a “low hanging fruit ripe for plucking” must have been a terrible mirage. This has done nothing though to affect in any way the high regards Chief Ibori and his Media Office have for President Muhammadu Buhari, his administration and Ministers, including the Justice Minister, Mr. Abubakar Malami. Chief Ibori wishes them well in their stated bid to leave Nigeria better than they found it.

Signed: Tony Eluemunor
Media Assistant to Chief James Onanefe Ibori.

Tompolo makes u-turn ready to face EFCC

FORMER General Officer Commanding, GOC, Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger-Delta, MEND, Government Ekpumupolo, alias Tompolo, made a volte face, Thursday, saying he would appear before the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, which issued a bench warrant for his arrest, January 14, but “at the appropriate time.”

The bench warrant followed an application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, which had filed different charges against Tompolo, including diversion of N34 billion belonging to the Nigerian Maritime and Safety Agency, NIMASA to personal use and laundering of N22.6 billion.

Tompolo, who spoke through his Media Adviser and Consultant, Mr. Paul Bebenimibo also said he would never commence war against the Federal Government having accepted amnesty in 2009, reiterating that he was not party to the recent three-day bombing of crude oil and gas pipelines in Delta state.

“Tompolo has no reason to bomb pipelines because of EFCC case, he knows he is innocent. As he has stated in several occasions, he will appear in court at the appropriate time as his lawyers are working towards that,” he said.

Before now, Tompolo had said, “The truth of the matter is that I do not know anything about the N34 billion naira EFCC is talking about, first, it was 13 billion issue, now it is 34 billion. I am not a signatory to any of the companies mentioned in the said 34 billion case. So I do not know where this one is coming from.”

Reacting to the allegation by another ex-militant leader, Africanus Ukparasia, aliast “General” Africa that he bombed pipelines, Tompolo said he alerted the public that some aggrieved All Progressives Congress, APC, members in Bayesla and Delta states want to destroy national assestsin the Niger Delta state and finger him because of the outcome of the Bayelsa governorship election.

According to the statement, “And true to his fears, these set of APC chieftains that joined the party immediately after the presidential election of 2015 were the first people to accuse him of bombing the pipelines to divert public attention.”

On speed boats for war
Tompolo said “it is the biggest lie of the year, as the military is also aware of the boats and pick-up vans he purchased in 2011 for the surveillance of oil facilities as he was working hand in hand with the military then.

“Tompolo is a man of peace and he is poised for the development of the coastal Niger Delta region. He prays that this matter be amicably resolved so that everyone will know that he always put his people above his person gains.”

“And true to his fears, these set of APC chieftains that joined the party immediately after the presidential election of 2015, were the first people to accuse him of bombing the pipelines to divert public attention.

“These new APC members who the former chairman of the party, Chief Bisi Akande, described as parasites, also threatened to cause problem in the Niger Delta region if the pipeline surveillance contract in Delta State already awarded to Messers Ocean Marine Solution is not re-awarded to them.

This is a clear testimony of their involvement in the bombing of the pipelines. Since then, we all have seen their role in misleading the military and the general public.

“Now, it could be recalled that this same Africanus Ukparasia threatened Tompolo not to show interest in the elections, as he was a strong supporter of the APC candidate. He killed and maimed fellow Ijaw people because of a governorship election, and now he is the one accusing Tompolo of bombing pipelines.”

PDP lied to us about Buhari – Former Patience Jonathan aide

Mr. Marvin Yobana, the Africa’s representatives in the World Assembly of Youths and former aide to Mrs. Patience Jonathan has revealed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lied to the Niger Delta people about the personality of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Yobana said this at the reception of over 700 defectors of PDP to APC in Khana local government area,

he was an ardent supporter of former president, Goodluck Jonathan and was deceived into believing that President Buhari did not like Niger Delta people but 60 days after his assumption of office, he approved the implementation of the United Nations Empowerment Project report.

Senator Magnus Ngei Abe, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the Rivers South-East Senatorial District re-run election predicted that members of the PDP will move en-masse to the APC before the state and National Assembly re-run elections.

Senator Abe said that the Ogoni people have realized that PDP has nothing to offer to them.

He urged those still in PDP and wishing to decamp to do so immediately as the APC is willing to accept them and work with them in the campaign pointing out that those who worked for the party during the elections will also be considered by the party in victory.

“We expect that we will work together to move Ogoni to greater height where everybody will have a chance of prosperity”, he said.
He explained that that singular action tells that the Ogoni stand to benefit more in Buhari’s administration than being in the opposition party.

He urged Ogoni people to vote massively for Senator Abe and other candidates of the APC at the re-run elections.

In his speech at the event, Hon. Emma Deeyah, a former member of the House of Representatives, said that the Ijaw people under Jonathan’s administration let the Ogoni down and urged the Ogoni still in PDP to decamp en-masse to give support to President Buhari, pointing out that with Senator Abe as their representative in the Senate, he would attract development projects for the Ogoni and speak their minds in the upper legislative chamber.

Also speaking, Hon. Maurice Pronen, the APC candidate in the House of Representatives for Gokana/Khana federal constituency re-run election, said that APC parades candidates with better credentials that PDP in the likes of Senator Magnus Abe and others.

In his own speech, Hon. Asita Okorie Asita, the APC deputy gubernatorial candidate, said that they saw the victory of Buhari coming and asked Rivers people to be in the train, but some did not listen; but today, Buhari is the president.

He urged Rivers people to eschew violence during and after the re-run elections and remain steadfast in APC as such will bring accelerated development than being in the opposition.

In his speech while receiving the defectors, the State APC Secretary, Chief Emeka Bekee, said, “This is a great party that will handle the problem of Ogoni people. You have joined this party, go and preach our gospel, the gospel of peace, love and development of Rivers state”.

Okowa Meets NYSC Management, Advocates Skill Acquisition For Corps Members.

DELTA State Governor, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa has canvassed the training of members of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) in different skill acquisition programmes to equip them with broader knowledge for self employment.

Governor Okowa made the call yesterday (27/01/16) in Asaba when the Director-General of the NYSC Brigadier-General Johnson Olawumi led officials of the scheme to pay him a courtesy visit.

The Governor who lauded the objectives behind setting up the scheme, stated that equipping graduates with practical skills during the service year would be added advantage as it would reduce the number of graduates seeking for the few or non-available civil service jobs.

According to him, "I hope that we will encourage our graduates to acquire skills while they are in camp to enable them to be engaged in agriculture and other self-sustaining skills, because, the white collar jobs are not easily available."

He added, "we must find a way of re-orientating them within the service year to begin to think about what they can do with their hands and with their brains and I hope that the various governments too will create the enabling environment for them to acquire skills to be able to find some form of funding to be able start up their own businesses in the future."

"I believe the NYSC has been a success story in this nation despite the challenges that we have," the Governor observed, reiterating, "it is one scheme that has brought unity, enabled our youths to be exposed to various states in the nation and has served as a stabilizing tool for our nation."

While commending management of the scheme for choosing Asaba as the venue for their 2016 'annual management/stakeholders' meeting,' Governor Okowa emphasized, "it is important for us to always do stock-taking to enable us plan and project for the subsequent year for its success."

He assured the Director-General of his administration's commitment to assisting the NYSC to succeed in the state.

Earlier, Brigadier-General Olawumi had told the Governor they were in the state for their annual management conference which brings together top officers of the scheme with all stakeholders to discuss the journey so far and how to ensure better performances.

He thanked the Governor for the state government's assistance for the effective operation of the scheme in the state.

Landlord serves former Inspector-General of Police and Chairman, Police Service Commission, Mike Okiro, a quit notice.

The owner of an Abuja residence of a former Inspector-General of Police and Chairman, Police Service Commission, Mike Okiro, has issued the former police boss a quit notice.

The landlord, Kundi Nigeria Limited, was said to have taken the step after Okiro allegedly refused to vacate the house at the termination of his tenancy.

The house is located at A06-4 Esa Oke Hill Close, Off Katsina Ala Crescent, Maitama District, Abuja.

Okiro is said to have ignored a three-month quit notice earlier served on him on April 30, 2015 and the seven days “notice of owner’s intention to recover vacant possession of the property” which was served on him on December 1, 2015 by the property owner.

This is contained in the plaintiff’s averment in a writ of summons marked, CV/M/01/1016 issued at the District Court of the Federal Capital Territory Wuse, Abuja by Kundi Limited through its lawyer, Baba lawal Aliyu.

The plaintiff seeks among others, an order compelling Okiro to vacate the property and pay “mesne profit from October 31, 2015 at N666,666.00 per month till when judgment is entered.”

Kundi stated that it entered into a two-year tenancy agreement with Okiro on July 25, 2013 at an annual rent of N8m for the property – a five-bedroom duplex and three-bedroom guest chalet. It added that it issued the ex-IGP a quit notice and subsequently a seven-day notice of intention to recover the property at the expiration of the agreement.

It stated that despite the two notices, as required by the agreement, Okiro allegedly refused to vacate the house, a development that informed the suit.

“Since the expiration of the tenancy, the defendant has remained in occupation and enjoyment of the property and thereby accumulated mesne profit,” it added.

The plaintiff alleged that Okiro had said he would remove the fittings he purportedly erected in the property if he was to vacate the property.

It applied to the court to restrain the ex-IGP from removing any fittings from the property as there was no agreement between parties for the tenant to effect any renovation in the house.

Okiro has yet to file any response to the case, which has yet to be assigned for hearing.

Lack of Se x depresses South African Women Survey Reveals.

A study among more than 700 South African women – all involved in committed relationships – found that a lack of sexu al intimacy led to elevated symptoms of depression.

The survey, which was conducted by anti-depressant pharmaceutical firm, Pharma Dynamics, polled women of various walks of life, between the ages of 18 and 55 on the effects that se x – or the lack thereof – have on their mental well-being.

While eight in one women considered themselves to have a healthy se x drive, 15% cited their partner’s disinterest, as one of the primary reasons for not having se x as often as they would like to.

Here are some tips on dealing with sexu al rejection:

Don’t take it personally – remind yourself that your partner’s lack of interest in se x may not be about you

Try a new approach. Don’t initiate sex for a while and see what happens

Examine your relationship and ask yourself what was different about the times when your partner was more interested in se x and try to somehow recreate those conditions

Focus on what makes you happy, for example, spending time with friends, starting a new hobby, joining a sport or dance club etc. If he sees you focusing on yourself rather than your se x life, he might want to become more involved in ‘every’ aspect of your life

“Never lose sight of the importance of putting constant effort into a relationship. You need to be inventive, surprising and work at it in order for it to remain exciting and for you both to enjoy a strong emotional and physical bond.

Another study found mood-boosting compounds in semen

Women are 70% more likely to suffer from depression than men

Eritrea orders men to marry two wives or be jailed

Eritrean men have been asked by the government to marry more than one wife or risk being jailed for life.

This is contained in a statement in Arabic by the Grand Mufti (the highest official of religious law in the country) which scanned copy surfaced on social media sites on Thursday last week.

In the statement, Eritrea called for all men in the country to marry at least two wives and the government assured the men that it would pay for the marriage ceremonies and houses.

According to the government, the order is because there is an acute shortage of men occasioned by causalities during the civil war with Ethiopia.

Afkinsider.com said the document, which could not be independently verified, warned that any man or woman who opposes the decision “will face a life sentence”.

The document in Arabic, which is in Arabic, says, “Based on the law of God in polygamy, and given the circumstances which the country is experiencing in terms of men shortage, the Eritrean department of Religious Affairs has decided on the following:

“First that every man shall marry at least two women and the man who refuses to do so shall be subjected to life imprisonment with hard labour.

“The woman who tries to prevent her husband from marrying another wife shall be punished to life imprisonment.”

More than 150,000 Eritrean soldiers were killed during the secession war from Ethiopia between 1998 and 2000. At the time Eritrea had about four million people.
