OKOWA CALLS FOR SUMMIT TO DEVELOP EDUCATION SECTOR

Delta State Governor, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa has disclosed that his administration would soon hold an Education Summit to chart the way forward for the educational sector in the state.

Governor Okowa who stated this today [25-8-15] when the Okobaro of Ughievwen Kingdom HRM Matthew Edirin Owhawha II led members of the community on a courtesy visit, said that the proliferation of tertiary institutions in the state without meeting the requisite educational standard was harmful to the development of the state.

“We intend very soon to call for an education summit in which our people will speak to one another in honest truth as one, to stand on the path that l think is right and to sit down and talk in deep truth on what is the best way forward for Delta state, wherever an institution exists in Delta, let us make it the best, let us make it a standard but let it be one that wherever you come from, you will take pride in the institution. it is better to have a standard institution than mushroom institutions that will make us query what knowledge comes out from such institutions” Senator Okowa said. He stressed that there is need to be careful in moving foward, "we must look into the past and admit where we have made mistakes and agree amongst ourselves on what is right to be done in order to bequeath a Delta state to the ones we will leave behind”.

The governor stated that “I hope and pray that after the Summit we will sit and talk about what is right to be done so that we do not just request for various institutions to be put up in our local governments and destroy our state in the pretence that we are actually building it”

While appealing to Deltans to help check pipeline vandalism and give peace a chance, especially as it does more harm to the state's economy and the environment, Governor Okowa disclosed that an Oil Summit would soon hold in Warri to fashion out the way forward.

He stressed that pipeline vandalism and oil theft have inflicted greater pains on the state and its development.

The governor who explained that the falling oil price has been a challenge to the state and the nation reiterated that his administration would remain committed, accountable and truthful to the people in the judicious use of its resources.

Senator Okowa commended the traditional ruler and people of Ughievwen kingdom for their peaceful and accommodating nature and promised to look into their requests.

Earlier, the Traditional Ruler Of Ughievwen Kingdom, HRM Matthew Egbi said that the visit was to convey the support of the people of the kingdom to the state government's SMART agenda and prosperity for all Deltans initiative and requested for more infrastructural projects to speed up the development of the area.
