Nobody Is Above The Law, Osinbajo Says
The Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbanjo on Wednesday said that the Buhari administration would not spare anyone who went against the law as it would propagate the Rule of Law in all its programmes.
“There is nobody who will be above the law in Nigeria, no matter who you are,” Osinbajo said when the officials of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) paid him a solidarity visit at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.
“You cannot use party. You cannot use the association; you cannot use position in government. Nobody is above the law. That is the first move. And I want us to support that.
“Let us not say that if a person who is one of our own is being held to account for his wrong-doing, so long as the person is being held to account according to law, we must not support such a person.
“We must say let the law take its course. That is how good societies are run, there is no other way. If we see fairness, let us describe it as fairness; let us support what is right and good for our country.
“And our country is going to call upon us time and time again. We are the elite of this country. There is no other elite. You can’t look anywhere else for elite,” he said.
Osinbajo said that the NURTW was an important stakeholder in the road transport network with as much national outlook as the Nigerian Army.
“Your role cannot be diminished and it comes with a lot of responsibilities.
“One of the things that we have said consistently is that our elite must understand that every privilege comes with responsibilities,” he said.
Osinbajo noted the responsibility of those in government to maintain the peace and stability of the nation “because if the society breaks down none of us can function”.
He told the officials that the insurgency in the North “has a terminal date. We will see the end to Boko Haram in the shortest time possible.”
But everyone has a role to play. “What you and I can do is to educate our people especially those involved in the entire travel value chain to desist from carrying goods that we do not know the content and to alert the security on such issues,” he advised.
“We must defeat these people and the only way to defeat it is by working together,” he added.
