The Senator representing Delta North at the
National Assembly, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa has been honoured with a civic
reception and presentation of award by a community-based pressure group, Enuani
Democratic League based in Aniocha South local government area of Delta State.
The ceremony which took place last weekend
at Ejeme-Aniogor in Aniocha South local government area had in attendance some
prominent sons and daughters of Anioma who include: Chief Awele Nwabuokei (The
Anioma Personality of the Year), who was chairman of the occasion, Sir (Prince)
Peter Idabor, DG, NOSDRA, Abuja, Chief Nkem Okwuofu, Hon. Evang. (Mrs) Joan
Onyemaechi Mrakpor, both of whom were represented, Bar. Uche Chibuogwu Odum and
Dr. O. B. Oluleye, Executive Secretary, PTDF, Abuja amongst other dignitaries.
Addressing the mammoth crowd, Senator
Ifeanyi Okowa expressed appreciation for the honour done him. He said he was
overwhelmed by the show of love and the magnitude of the event, which he
observed was a pointer to the fact that the people of Anioma were happy with
the much he had achieved as their representative at the Senate in the last two
years.
While reiterating his commitment to
effective representation of the people of Delta North, he said he would
continue to champion bills that would add value to the lives of Nigerians.
"I am in the Senate to represent our
people. I know how our people stood for me to represent them. I promise that I
will not fail to deliver on the mandate given to me by our people," he
told the gathering.
He said the Bills he had so far sponsored
were meant to improve the well-being of Nigerians, adding that he would
continue to work to ensure they are eventually passed. He said that among them
(Bills) the one most dear to him was the National Health Bill, which he noted
would help Nigerians to access health-care with ease, without spending money.
"We cannot be talking of saving lives
without putting in place proper and effective healthcare policies that would
remove the burden of accessing healthcare by our people," he added.
He informed the people that four of the
Bills he sponsored were at the3rd Reading, adding that he has the highest
number of Bills at 3rd Reading in the current Senate.
Senator Okowa, who is Chairman, Senate
Committee on Health, expressed displeasure over the poor state of the health
center in the community, which he said he facilitated and ensured adequate
provisions were made for it to be functional, while he was part of the state
government, but regretted that the place was in a state of disrepair. He
however promised the people that in a few weeks work will commence on a new
health care center, which he facilitated, in the community, and requested them
to make land available for the project.
The federal lawmaker while underscoring the
need for communities to always endeavour to follow up and monitor projects
sited in their areas, urged public office holders to always be mindful of their
responsibilities to the people.
"When we aspire to be in public office
we should know that our people who put us there expect a corresponding returns
to better their lives, " he stated.
In his address, the Chairman of Enuani
Democratic League, Hon. Collins Iwebunor, described Senator Okowa as a
political leader of immense status that has devoted his political career to
touching lives and bringing development to the people.
He said the grand civic reception and award
on Senator Okowa was in appreciation of his giant strides in politics and human
empowerment, adding that the group had taken time to understudy his political
stewardship and leadership model over the years and decided to honour him,
saying they were proud of him and his achievements.
He called on the people of Delta North to
continue to support Senator Okowa, adding that he was confident that the
federal lawmaker will continue to deliver on the mandate given to him by the
people.
