Political Appointees Must Give Credible Counsel To Gov Okowa –Asem
With over six months into the new administration in Delta State, political appointees in whatever capacity have been urged to give quality and selfless counsel to the Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, in order to make him succeed in the task of making the state the envy of other states in the country.
Giving the advice in Asaba, the state capital, Barr. Joe Asem said though Gov Okowa means well for the State and its citizenry, there is not much he can achieve in government, if denied the much needed quality counsel by those he had appointed as his aides.
Such counsel, he reasoned, would determine the quality of leadership and governance and the success of the governor’s Prosperity for all Deltans programme which is encapsulated in the SMART AGENDA.
Barr Asem said good leadership to a great extent was about good counsel given to a leader by his aides adding, ‘It is the people (electorate) that matter, not the individual, You can own a jet, buildings and other worldly properties, you will one day die an individual but, those good things which you did for the people to make life more meaningful will be a legacy you will leave behind for them and their children yet unborn.”
Therefore, he said, political appointees at whatever level in the tate should endeavour to shun self and be honest to themselves, the electorate and Gov Okowa by supporting him with wise counsel that would enable him deliver on his mandate to the people and leave a worthy legacy at the end of his administration.
“Every leader needs the good and wise counsel of his lieutenants or subordinates and the quality of leadership which a leader gives to a great extent is dependent on the kind of counsel he gets from his subordinates”, he said.
Consequently, he said political appointees in the state must first see their appointment as a call to genuinely serve the people and not an opportunity to enrich themselves with government money.
While saying that Deltans are watching, he said that there was the need for political appointees to use the position they presently occupy to develop their constituency by extending the dividends of democracy to the people in their own little way, reasoning that, should they do that the credit will not only go to them but to the government and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP administration in the State.
“Gov Ifeanyi Okowa cannot do it alone, in delivery democracy dividends to the people, he needs your contributions in your own little ways in your constituency to accomplish that”, he added.
Reacting to some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members who defeated to the All Progressive Congress (APC), in the State, Barr Asem described them as people who are only interested in seeking greener pastures, and who do not genuinely have the interest of the PDP in mind.
