Jose Mourinho |
The Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinho, will be smiling to the bank if he is eventually shown the exit door, as has been widely speculated.
The Daily Mirror reports that the Portuguese is in line for a pay-out of over £30 million should the EPL champions stage a U-turn and sack him.
The Chelsea board had earlier released a statement pledging to stick with Mourinho despite the champions slow start to the season.
But despite the club board’s support for the beleaguered Mourinho, the Portuguese has come under severe attack from fans, players and followers of the EPL.
One of these is the former England manager Fabio Capello, who in a recent chat with Fox Sports linked Chelsea’s disappointing start to the season to Mourinho burning out his players.
Mourinho signed a mouth-watering new deal worth around £8.5 million-a-year two months ago after winning the Barclays Premier League in May and the Capital One Cup three months earlier.
The deal will see him remain at the reins of affairs at the club until 2019.
But if the 52-year-old is sacked, Chelsea will have to cough up mega-money to pay him off.
Chelsea have been poor so far in this campaign and sit 16th, having lost more top-flight matches already this term than they did in the whole of 2014-15.
The most recent defeat came over the weekend when the team fell 3-1 at home to Southampton.
After last Saturday’s shock defeat the club is in danger of not making the Champions League.
No team in Premier League history has ever made it into the top four after picking up just eight points, as Chelsea have, from their first eight games.
