Owa- Oyibu Community Development Union (O.C.D.U), has at the end of her 2015, Annual General conference held on Saturday, October 3 at the Odogwu hall, Owa Royal Palace, Owa- Oyibu, Ika North East Local Government Area, passed a vote of confidence on the Executive Governor of Delta State, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa.
The union speaking in a communiqué through the Executive Chairman of Ika North-East Local Government, Hon. Barr. F.I Eborka, said, “We have seen the effectiveness of the State Governor and therefore, we as a community hereby, pledge our support to him whole heartedly”.
The union however, pleaded with the Governor to give the Owa- Oyibu community a face- lift for it to meet the status of a local government headquarters.
Giving his opening remark at the function, the Obi of Owa, HRM Dr. Emmanuel Efeizomor 11, who is the Grand patron of the union, called on all Owa- Oyibu citizens to cultivate the spirit of unity as well as encourage collective development initiative. While admonishing the youths to develop the attitude of resourcefulness and self help, he urged them to embrace education, acquire a skill or learn a trade as these would make them self-reliant, just as he frowned at the mass migration of youths to foreign countries in search of quick money.
The monarch further condemned the school system's failure, stressing that at 9: 00 am, school children could still be seen loitering the streets and going to school in a non-challant manner, advising that no matter the circumstance, the place of education could not be over emphasized in the society.
On security issues, the OCDU expressed satisfaction with the operations of the Owa-Oyibu community policing outfit (vigilante group), stating that the union was happy with the contributions and efforts of the vigilante group towards combating crime in Owa- Oyibu community and therefore, called on well meaning Owa-Oyibu sons and daughters to contribute towards the sustenance of the group as they work to guarantee a crime-free and serene society.
In a related development, the union summarily dissolved the Owa- Oyibu Youths Association. Moving the motion for the dissolution of the Youths Association, Gen. Ephraim Usiade, (Rtd) said, “In view of the apparent lawlessness of the youths, I hereby, move the motion for the dissolution of the Owa-Oyibu Youths Association. The motion was seconded by the Iyase of Owa, Chief O.C Nwokenye.
Also commenting on the dissolution of the Youths Association, Hon. Barr. F. I Eborka stated that with the motion for dissolution moved and seconded, the youth association is hereby dissolved, warning that anyone who goes about extorting money from contractors or land developers in the name of Youth Association would be arrested and charged to court.
Also speaking the President General of the union, Hon. Hubert Obiagwe pointed out that lack of funds was a factor militating against the effective functioning of the union. He complained about the lack of commitment and non-payment of mandatory levies by members, as he pleaded for the steadfast commitment of members in order to move the community forward.
On community and youth development, he urged indigenes to build modern houses so that strangers could come to live with them and establish small and medium scale business to create wealth and jobs for the youths, while noting that a skill acquisition centre had been approved for the community, adding that due to lack of suitable site, the centre was yet to commence functioning.
In paper presentations titled Community Development: Owa Oyibu as a case study by Hon. Barr. F. I , Eborka and; Economic survival Through Entrepreneurial Skill Development by Dr. Emmanuel Onyejose, the speakers bemoaned the non-investment consciousness of Owa- Oyibu indigenous youths who they described as predominantly dependent and as scramblers who engage themselves as full time professional politicians. They called on the youths to revive themselves by becoming active contributors towards the growth and development of the community.
The conference was attended by, the Lagos branch delegates led by the Chairman, Mr. Monday Ogor, Warri branch delegates led by the Chairman, Mr. Agbontian, and the Benin branch delegates led by the Chairman, Deacon Aghaulor. Others in attendance included, Mr. Emmanuel Ikehi, the Managing Director, Juvico Oxford Bakery, Deacon John Ukperegbu, C.I .E, Ika North-East Ministry of Education, Mrs. Hope Igumbor amongst others.
