Dangers of unsafe abortion
Dr Godwin Akaba, a Gynaecologist at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada, on Tuesday said unsafe abortion could lead to haemorrhage, chronic pelvic infections and infertility.
Akaba made this known at a training for media practitioners on ‘’Women’s Se xual Reproductive Health and Rights’’ organised by Ipas, an international Non-Governmental Organisation, in Abuja.
Speaking of ‘’Health System Response to Maternal Mortality from Unsafe Abortion”, he explained that abortion was the loss of a pregnancy before it reached the age of foetal viability and could be spontaneous or induced.
According to him, it is a major contributor to maternal mortality in Nigeria.
Akaba stressed the need to scale up utilisation of modern contraceptives, provision of safe services and making abortion laws less restrictive in the country ‘’to prevent unsafe abortion’’.
He advised women with pregnancy issues and complications to ensure that they sought proper medical attention.
He also urged journalists to be strong advocates against unsafe abortion, saying that everybody was a stakeholder in the promotion of healthy society.
