Secondary school student dies during money ritual in Ogun, another hospitalised
ABEOKUTA—A 16-year-old secondary school student, Raimi Fatai, reportedly died in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, following alleged administration of a liquid substance on him by three of his classmates during a ritual.
Vanguard gathered that Fatai and his classmates had embarked on alleged money-making ritual with one of them, said to be the son of a native doctor, giving the deceased and another the substance.
A source close to the students told our correspondent that they consulted the herbalist to seek protection charms and ‘traditional knowledge enhancer.’
However, Fatai, who later fell ill after taking the substance, was said to have died two days later while the second victim, who was also on the verge of death, was taken to hospital.
Policemen from Adatan Division were said to have taken the corpse to a mortuary and arrested the other students for questioning. Findings have shown that Fatai’s corpse was later released to his family for burial.
It was further reported that Fatai’s father, who was bothered about the sudden death of his son, approached the father of another student who led them to the herbalist’s den before the case was reported to the police.
Authorities of the school (name withheld) summoned a meeting with the parents of the entire student populace.
The principal of the school confirmed the incident to our correspondent but stressed that the incident occurred outside the premises of the school during the Valentine period, so there was little the school authorities could do about it.
When contacted, the Ogun State Police Public Relation Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the command was investigating a sudden and unnatural death involving students of a secondary school in the state.
Adejobi, however, confirmed that the command had received conflicting reports on the case, vowing that the command would do a thorough investigation on the case.
Tompolo’s lawyers flay media reports on arrest warrant
Lawyers to ex-militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo (alias Tompolo), Mr Tayo Otetibo, SAN and Ebun-Olu Adegborowa, have dismissed media reports casting aspersions on their persons, while going ahead to deal on a matter that is pending in court.
It will be recalled that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, had filed a charge against Tompolo before a Federal High Court, Lagos. Meanwhile, following an application by EFCC, the court issued a bench warrant for Tompolo’s arrest.
Otetibo and Adegborowa, in reacting to the report, said: “For the avoidance of doubt, the newspaper did not hide its knowledge of the fact that Tompolo had appealed the order of the Federal High Court for the issuance of a warrant of arrest against him. If the newspaper believes in the supremacy of the rule of law, it ought to have respected the time tested rule that once a matter is pending before a court of law, all persons are enjoined to refrain from making comments that could prejudice the subject matter of the suit.
“So, in essence, the publication shows disrespect to the court by embarking on the needless exercise of sitting in judgment over the case. Quite apart from this preliminary issue, the publication raised some fundamental issues which, with respect to them, were borne out of ignorance of matters of law and procedure.”

Police withdraw Tompolo’s security aides
WARRI- GOVERNOR of one of the South-South states and prominent Ijaw leaders in Delta region have counseled the ex-General Officer Commanding, GOC, defunct Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger-Delta, MEND, Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo, to show up before the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, which renewed a bench warrant for his arrest on Monday.
An Ijaw leader, who preferred anonymity told Vanguard, yesterday: “Our counsel to Tompolo is to stem the feared bombardment of our communities and harassment of innocent citizens by security operatives under the guise of searching for him and perpetrators of January pipeline bombing in the state.”
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, had withdrawn the security aides approved for Tompolo by the Federal Government since 2009 under the leadership of late President Umaru Yar’Adua.
Vanguard learned that the security aides, who had been with Tompolo for nearly six years, were withdrawn soon after Justice Ibrahim Buba issued the first bench warrant against the ex-militant leader, last month. A source close to Tompolo confirmed the development to Vanguard, yesterday.
In addition, security chiefs in the Niger-Delta were reportedly strategizing, yesterday, on how to track down Tompolo following the court order to produce him on February 19.
Two key questions the Joint Task Force, JTF, in the Niger-Delta had posed to those it arrested over the January pipeline bombing in Delta state were their link with Tompolo and his whereabouts, which it was yet to unravel until the court renewed the bench warrant.

Four feared dead in Army, militants clash in Rivers
PORT HARCOURT—Four persons were feared dead, yesterday, in Bori, headquarters of Gokhana Local Government Area, Rivers State, as soldiers allegedly engaged loyalists of an ex-militant leader in a shootout.
Some students of the state- owned Kenule Beeson Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic, Bori, who spoke to Vanguard on phone said that they were trapped in their rooms at press time as they could not find vehicles at the motor park in Bori to convey them to their various destinations.
The students, who did not want their names in print, said that they went for lectures but were told it was a lecture free day.
“We were told there would be no lectures from Monday till further notice. We are sure they don’t want to announce closure for now, they are studying the situation,” one of the students said.
Vanguard gathered that motor parks, markets and major stores in the area were shut down because of the tension in the town.
Community sources who also spoke to Vanguard said that they saw five corpses on Taabaa Street, stressing that people in the area were living in fear.
Meanwhile, Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People and the Civil Liberties Organisation, have condemned the military operation in Bori, saying that it had led to loss of innocent lives in some communities in the area.
Publicity Secretary, MOSOP, Fegalo Nsuke, in a statement yesterday, said that the military invasion of Yeghe community on Monday resulted in the death of three persons, adding that some others sustained gunshot injuries.
He said: “We are outraged and condemn in strong terms the invasion of Ogoni communities by the Nigerian military and demand from government the immediate withdrawal of the invading soldiers.”
CLO, on its part, demanded an investigation into allegations against some politicians who were fingered to have masterminded the invasion of the homes of an ex-militant and occupation of Ogoniland because they allegedly refused to be used as tools during the re-run election.
However, Governor Nyesom Wike has appealed to those who fled Gokhana and Khana Local Government Areas in the wake of the military operations in communities in the councils to come back.
The governor, in a statement by his media aide, yesterday, Mr Simeon Nwakaudu, said that the heavy presence of soldiers in the councils was mainly to ensure maintenance of law and order, pleading that residents should cooperate with the security men.
It will be recalled that soldiers stormed the residence of a former militant leader in Yeghe community, an action that provoked a clash between soldiers and supporters of the ex-militant leader.
According to Bori community sources, supporters of the ex-militant leader were chased to Bori by soldiers, yesterday morning and there was alleged exchange of fire.
“Soldiers have taken over the whole of Bori. They are everywhere,” said Barine Joyce, a resident in the area.
It will be recalled that soldiers allegedly raided the residence of the ex-militant leader, Ndigbara, in Yeghe on Monday.
The ex-militant leader, in a statement, yesterday, in Port Harcourt, accused Senator Magnus Abe of sponsoring the military operation.
He said that the soldiers razed his house and killed two persons in his compound.
Saying that his life was under threat, the ex-militant leader alleged that some politicians were using soldiers to harass him because he allegedly declined to join the All Progressives Congress, APC.
But Senator Abe has denied sponsoring the military operation, as he called on his supporters to remain calm.
Senator Abe, who spoke through his media aide, Mr Parry Benson, appealed to his supporters to remain calm, saying that they should not retaliate the burning of his campaign office in Bori.
There were rumours that the army lost three soldiers during the operation but this they denied.
Commander 2 Brigade, Major General Olabanji Stephenson denied allegation that the military operation was influenced by Senator Abe, stressing that it was purely military operation to rid the area of hoodlums and criminals.

Iraqi Kurdish Forces ‘Rescue Swedish Girl From IS’
Iraqi Kurdish forces rescued a 16-year-old Swedish girl from Islamic State militants near the city of Mosul last Wednesday, Kurdish officials say. A statement by the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC) said the girl was from the town of Boras. She was “misled by an [IS] member in Sweden to travel to Syria and later to Mosul”, it added.
A spokeswoman for the Swedish foreign ministry told a Swedish newspaper that it had no information about the case. The KRSC statement, which named the girl and included a photograph of her, said it had been called upon by Swedish authorities and members of her family to assist in locating and rescuing her from IS, which has controlled Mosul since 2014. “She is currently in the Kurdistan Region and is provided the care afforded to her under international law,” it added.
“She will be transferred to Swedish authorities to return home once necessary arrangements are put place.”
The girl was 15 years old and pregnant when she ran away from Boras last May with her boyfriend and travelled to Syria, Swedish media reported. The girl was seized by IS in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo in August, after which she was moved to territory controlled by the jihadist group. In mid-August, the Swedish foreign ministry confirmed it had been told a Swedish minor was in Syria, and said it was in contact with family members.

Okowa Congratulates David Mark on his Election Victory
Delta State Governor, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, has congratulated former Senate President Senator David Mark, on his victory at the just concluded Benue South Senatorial District Rerun Election which heldFebruary 20th 2016.
This was contained in a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Charles Ehiedu Aniagwu, wherein the Governor described the victory as "well deserved” for Mark, a member of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP.
Governor Okowa while commending INEC, security agencies and the people of Benue South Senatorial District for a peaceful and successful election said the outcome of the keenly contested election is a true reflection of the wishes of the people of Benue South.
The Governor expressed gratitude to God for the victory of Senator Mark while urging the distinguished Senator to be magnanimous in victory by extending a hand of fellowship to his opponents in the interest of the Benue South Senatorial District.
"On behalf of the government and people of Delta State, I congratulate you on your hard earned victory at the Benue South Senatorial District Rerun Election. Your victory is well deserved because you campaigned vigorously, selling the party’s policies and programmes to the people of Benue South. Your victory in five out of nine local governments in the senatorial district showed that the election was largely free, fair and keenly contested,'' he stated.
“Your reelection for a record fifth term is a fulfillment of the clearly expressed wish of the people of Benue South, and a pointer to the resilience of the PDP in staging a comeback. I therefore urge you to be humble and magnanimous in victory, remain focused and ever committed to the advancement of the interests of all Benue South people irrespective of their political affiliations or loyalties,”
Governor Okowa further called on Senator David Mark to regard his reelection to serve as “a sacred mandate from God Almighty and his people which he must discharge with immense dedication, wisdom and vigour to achieve a much more rapid pace of socio-economic development in Benue South for the benefit of its people who resoundingly reaffirmed their trust in his leadership by voting overwhelmingly for his reelection in the just concluded polls."

He wished “Senator Mark continued good health and a very successful tenure in the 8th National Assembly”.
U-N-B-E-L-I-E-V-A-B-L-E: Delta hospital stockpiles corpses in the open
*Morgue overflows with dead bodies
*Patients sleep with rats in the sickbay – Chief Karetimi, Chair, Bomadi LG
*We’ll investigate—Dr. Nicholas Azinge, Commissioner for Health
BOMADI— MORTUARY attendants at the 44-year-old Bomadi General Hospital, Bomadi in Bomadi Local Government Area, Delta State, stack corpses on improvised wooden platforms after embalmment and bizarrely abandon them to the vagaries of the weather, day and night.
The eyesore, according to our investigations, is due to lack of space to preserve the dead bodies in the hospital’s overflowing mortuary.
Meanwhile, patients have expressed disgust at the dilapidated condition of the health-care facility plagued by rats and mosquitoes, which has heightened the fear of Lassa fever and Zika virus in the riverside community.
When Niger Delta Voice visited the morgue, our reporters saw embalmed corpses covered with blankets deserted.
Efforts to speak with some of the doctors were futile, as none of them agreed to comment on the situation. Workers, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said they were under pressure on daily basis because of the challenges faced by patients.
They called on government to resuscitate the hospital, which is the only government healthcare facility in the area.
Rats struggle for bread with me—Lawyer
A lawyer and human rights activist, E.U Opukiri, whose wife was on admission, narrated his experience: “I am a barrister of nine years in the bar, I came to this hospital because of the health of my wife and my experiences here in these two days are pathetic. There was no electricity and water in the hospital premises, a state government hospital for that matter.
“In the night when the rechargeable lamp we were using went off, rats came out in large numbers and spread everywhere. Some of them came specifically for the bread I bought for my wife, dragging it with me.
“Out of fear, I took the bread and made it a pillow at the head-side of the bed. I was, however, uncomfortable with it because of its shape and so I decided to put it in a cupboard-like shelf there. When I opened the shelf, I saw that it was a haven for rats. There were so many rats that I became afraid being aware of the prevalent Lassa fever caused by rats. We could not sleep at night these two days we were there,” he said.
Opukiri said: “Again, the hospital morgue too is an eye sore; our revered and deceased parents are dried right outside in the sun like Bonga fish, which is right there (pointing to the morgue). Therefore, I want government to intervene in this health facility immediately.
“As a matter of fact, I can categorically tell you that there is no water in this hospital. All the water facilities are dilapidated, which you can see for yourself. I had to go out of the hospital’s premises in the night to the riverside to fetch water for my wife.”
Leader of Bomadi Legislative Assembly, Hon Bekes Tonprebofa, who was a patient in the hospital, last year, complained bitterly about the state of the facilities, appealed to the state government to do the needful in the hospital.
Contacted on phone, Commissioner for Health, Delta State, Dr. Nicholas Azinge, said he was not aware of the development and promised to investigate the matter.
Why they keep corpses outside—Karetimi
Chair, Bomadi Local Government Area, Chief Oluwole Karetimi, who spoke to NDV, said the health facility required complete renovation/rehabilitation, adding that government has not upgraded it since its commissioning in the early 1970s.
Karetimi asserted: “I appeal to the state government to undertake complete renovation and upgrading of the hospital. We are aware that patients sleep with rats and mosquitoes during the night because of its state.
“The Lassa fever that we are talking about is a disease carried by rats. Now that we cannot assist the state government because of financial incapability, we appeal to the Hospital Management Board, HMB, Asaba and our amiable governor to quickly come to our aid.”
On the dead bodies kept outside the morgue, he said: “Corpses are now placed outside the mortuary because of space, which also needs upgrading.
The primary health-care centre too needs attention.
Again, if people keep their dead in the mortuary for more than one, two years as reported, then, the management of the hospital should formally write to the families concerned and give mass burial to such corpses if they refuse to take them.”
Not a good omen—Royal father
Traditional ruler of Kpakiama urban community, Chief Ambakederemo Bunu, who expressed dismay that corpses litter the outside of the mortuary, said it could lead to outbreak of both air and water-borne diseases and called on government to quickly intervene and save lives of the rural dwellers.
He also noted that the presence of rats in a government health-care facility at this time of Lassa fever disease was not a good omen for the people.
Relocate mortuary – Community chair
On his part, chair, Bomadi community, Hon. Stephen Muturu, said, “A situation whereby those on sick bed always see corpses that are carried through the wards to the mortuary is not palatable. Government should shift and fence the mortuary and construct a road from the fence at the backside to carry dead bodies.”
State intervention urgently needed- Councilor
Supervisory Councilor for Health, Hon. Lawrence T. Timbor, in his reaction, observed that the general hospital’s mortuary needed expansion because it was too small for an area that is fast growing, as compared to the time government built it.
