Jonathan Onwuka
The leadership and members of the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employee ( NULGE ) in Delta State have endorsed the governorship candidate of the People's Democratic Party, PDP, in the state, for the forthcoming elections, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa.
The union made their position known, Friday, during a solidarity rally held at the Event Centre, Asaba, where members from across the twenty - five local government areas in the state, gathered, to declare their unwavering support for the candidature of the PDP governorship flag bearer.
Speaking at the event, the Delta State Chairman of NULGE, Comrade David Ofoeyeno, said their decision to support PDP, was based on the antecedents of its governorship flag bearer, Senator Okowa, who he said has remained a true friend of workers in Delta State.
While recollecting the different positive roles played by Senator Okowa in the past in improving the welfare of workers in the state, especially during his stint as Secretary to the State Government, SSG, when he facilitated the 7.5 percent salary increase for council staff, Comrade Ofoeyeno, noted that he (Okowa ) has been a blessing to workers in the state.
He stated that, "even though NULGE is not partisan, we have found in Senator Okowa a true friend and leader, who truly deserves our support and votes," adding that members of the union have not only resolved to support Okowa, but to go all out to mobilise Deltans to vote for him(Okowa) and other PDP candidates, because according to him, "we believe that he is well equipped to give our people the desired leadership. "
He disclosed that members of the union across the state have been mandated to engage in house to house campaign for Okowa, adding that a ten- member House to House Committee has been set up in each of the local government area for effective campaign and mobilisation.
The National President of NULGE, Alhaji Ibrahim Kali, who was present at the rally, enjoined members of the union to do all that was necessary to ensure Senator Okowa emerges victorious at the polls, even as he expressed confidence that Okowa will not let local government workers down when he assumes office as governor of Delta State.
Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, in his remarks expressed appreciation to the leadership of NULGE for their support, and noted that he owes a lot of gratitude to the local government, having started his political career from there, as Council Secretary. "I can rightfully claim I am part of you, having started my political career as Secretary to then Ika Local Government Area," he stated.
He noted that the local government was a very important and critical arm in public administration, being the closest to the people, and so deserves serious attention, and therfore, promised to partner with NULGE to improve on the lives of Deltans.
