Police Foil Church Robbery, Shoot Suspect Dead

Is nothing sacred anymore? It seems some misguided miscreants will stoop as low as trying to rob a church!

Police in Dutse, Jigawa state, have foiled an attempted armed attack on a Catholic Church in the area, gunning down a suspect in a major shoot out with suspected armed robbers.

According to a police source, a suspect identified as Godswill Boyi, together with two of his accomplices, stormed the parsonage of a reverend father in the church in Zone 5, Dutse, at about 3am last night.

The source said the church has suffered from a series of robbery attacks, the most recent of which was the night after the church held a bazaar for the local community.

The thieves managed to cart away an undisclosed sum of money from the church.
However, according to the source, the luck of the robbers ran out when a joint team of police surveillance men attached to the Dutse police division stormed the area following a distress call placed which was made by a security guard stationed near to the church.

“The policemen immediately swung into action, and in an exchange of fire, one of the robbers was gunned down,” the source added.

According to subsequent reports after the incident, the suspect identified as Godswill Boyi died of gunshot wounds shortly after he was detained.

When contacted, the Dutse divisional police officer, CSP Aisha Yusuf, confirmed that the shoot-out took place and that a suspect had died.

He added that a locally made pistol with four live round cartridges, three LG plasma televisions, two HP laptops, one Del laptop, one Acer mini laptop, one external hard disk, and two DVDs were recovered from the thieves.
