AS the nation faces financial challenges as a result of dwindling revenue from oil resources, Delta State Governor; Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Okowa has called for wealth redistribution in Nigeria.
Governor Okowa who said his administration will place emphasis on pensioners getting their emoluments and catering for the poor in the society, stated that it was important for the rich in the society to be their brothers’ keepers.
Senator Okowa spoke yesterday at St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Boji Boji Owa, Delta State during the 40th year ordination anniversary of Rt. Revd. Peter Onekpe as bishop.
The occasion was also used to give thanks to God for the successful retirement of Dame Mercy Onekpe from the civil service, 37th marriage anniversary, book launch, among others.
According to Senator Okowa, “as we thank God today in the midst of the poverty challenges of the time, at a time when the oil prices are down and governments are finding it difficult to pay salary, it is a time for sober reflection, it is time to think about what next to do, how can I impact on the life of that person who is not able to eat when I have excess on my table?” asserting, “we need wealth redistribution, we have gotten to a stage in this country when we have to be our brother’s keepers, where we must continue to look at the poor and find a way to assist them.”
“The Lord is able to take us from where we are to a better Nigeria,” the governor said, assuring that despite the financial challenges, his administration will work to ensure that pensioners get their emoluments as at when due.
“One thing we want to assure Deltans is that we will continue to stay accountable and we will continue to ensure that while we are looking out for the common good of all, we will pay special attention to the poor and pensioners, therefore, we are trying to look at what to do at this trying time to ensure that those remittances we have to make will continue conscientiously,” he said.
He congratulated Bishop Onekpe for spending forty years in the Lord’s vineyard, noting that it was important to give thanks to God. The Bishop of Oke Osun Diocese of the Anglican Communion, Rt. Revd. Abraham Akinlalu had in a sermon, called for patience and perseverance among Christians, stating, “There is no success without patience and perseverance.”
