Delta State Governor Senator Ifeanyi Okowa has described His Royal Majesty Obi (Dr) Emmanuel Efeizomor II as a symbol of humility who has impacted positively on his people and the state.

The governor who said this on Thursday (24/3/16) at Obi Efeizomor’s 78th Birthday anniversary and Book presentation in Owa-Oyibu, Ika North East local government area stated that HRM was a monarch whose reign has brought incredible transformation and continuous peace to Owa Kingdom.

The occasion which attracted dignitaries from across the state including the state Deputy Governor, Barr. Kingsley Otuaro, member representing Ika Federal Constituency, Hon. Victor Nwokolo, Chief Judge, Justice Marshall Umukoro, former deputy governors, top government functionaries and traditional rulers had presentation of a book titled "The Living Legend".

According to him "I thank God Almighty for your life because in your reign and even at your age you have rewritten the history of Owa Kingdom, through your hard work, drive and focus you have continued to grow this land as well as ensured that peace remains across this kingdom".

"As a peace builder you have done your best to positively impact on the development of this kingdom and the state, your humility and friendliness has made you a symbol that is cherished by all who meet you" the governor said.

Earlier, Chairman of the occasion, Prof. Sam Oyovbaire, congratulated HRM Obi Efeizomor II on his birthday celebration and called for more active roles to be executed by traditional rulers, explaining that "the federal and state government cannot effectively govern the people without the input of our traditional rulers as they are at the grassroots and know what the people truly need".

OKOWA ENJOINS CHRISTIANS TO EMULATE CHRIST’S HUMILITY

Delta State Governor, Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Okowa has enjoined Deltans, particularly, Christians, to emulate the humility of Jesus Christ, who in spite of his heavenly endowments, took up the cross in utter obedience to God’s will.

In a goodwill message to the people of Delta State signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Ehiedu Aniagwu Charles, Governor Okowa noted that the society would be a better place if adherents of Christianity imbibe the spirit of love and sacrifice; which is the bedrock of Christianity.

“Easter is the reason why we are called Christians. But Christianity places a demand on all of us -a responsibility to look out for each other and be our brothers’ keepers”, he said.

Governor Okowa noted that there is no where the demands of Christianity are required more than in Delta State with its unique multi-ethnic diversities.

He said that the ability to blur our lines of differences is the hallmark of love which is central to the Easter message.

“As a government, we are equally committed to using the instrumentalities of governance to affect the lives of Deltans positively. We are aware of the expectations of the people on us and are determined to match those expectations for the good of all”, the Governor said.

Governor Okowa observed that in the last few weeks he has embarked on the inspection of a number of projects that are on-going across the state and noted that the inspection is a continuation of efforts at gauging the pulse of the people of the state.

He said that he was encouraged by the outcome of those inspections that his administration was on course to enhancing opportunities for prosperity as promised during his electioneering campaigns and called on Deltans to use the period of the Easter celebrations to pray for peace and understanding among the people.

Gov. Okowa Charges Traditional Rulers On Provision Of Land For Investment

Delta State Governor, Senator, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa has urged traditional rulers and community leaders to partner with government in the provision of land resources for private sector investment to thrive in the state.

Speaking when he received traditional rulers and Executive Members of the Anioma Congress led by its Deputy Chairman, the Obi Of Owa, HRM Efeizomor II in Government House, Asaba yesterday [10-03-16] Governor Okowa said that the state needed to partner with the private sector in infrastructural development, but the traditional rulers has a duty to maintain peace and security in their domain and provide land resources for investors stressing that with private sector investment in our communities our youths would be gainfully engaged.

While promising that government would use any land provided for economic purposes that would be beneficial to the communities, Senator Okowa reminded the traditional rulers and community leaders that investments would only thrive in peaceful and secured environment charging them to cooperate with security agencies and Local Government Council Chairmen to provide investment friendly environment at all times.

"There is the need to partner with the private sector in order to develop our lands in Delta state, I want to continue to appeal that there is the need to keep our communities not only peaceful and safe but for us to be able to provide land resources so that for the investors that are coming we can refer them to such areas where there are available lands”, he said, adding “I have told the Commissioner for Lands to source out for areas across the state where communities are actually willing to make land available for the purpose of partnering with the private sector but this time, we will not just take up people’s land only to allocate it to individuals; any land that is made available by any community will be used for something that has an economic relevance to that community and to the people of Delta state”.

Governor Okowa disclosed that the state government was partnering with some investors to carry out housing, agricultural production and processing, and solar energy projects in the state, asserting that "these are the kinds of development we are looking into, apart from the fact that these houses will be taken up through mortgage and at reasonable prices, during the course of construction, our people will be employed and it will provide a lot of jobs for both skilled and unskilled workers”, stressing that “if we are able to get the private sector to invest in our lands then our people and many more of our youths will have a place to be engaged and employed”.

Earlier, HRM Obi Emmanuel Efeizomor II explained that they were in Asaba to felicitate with Governor Okowa on his electoral victories and his developmental strides assuring him of the unalloyed support of the Anioma people in the execution of developmental projects throughout the state.

Teenager dies after being raped and set on fire

A 16-year-old Indian girl who was raped and then set on fire on the roof of her home has died, police said Wednesday, the latest in a string of horrific sexual crimes in India.

The teenager, who sustained more than 90 percent burns in Monday’s attack, died in hospital early Wednesday, the investigating officer told AFP.

“Unfortunately she could not be saved despite the best efforts of the medical staff,” said Ashwani Kumar.

“We have arrested the accused, who is 19 years old and sent him to judicial custody.

“An investigation is on to find out more about the motive and details of the crime,” he said.

Media reports quoted the girl’s father as saying a neighbour in their village in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh had been harassing his daughter for a year despite several warnings.

The fatal gang-rape of a student on a bus in Delhi in 2012 shone a global spotlight on frightening levels of violence against women.

It also led to major reform of India’s rape laws including speeding up of trials and increasing penalties for offenders, but high numbers of assaults persist.

Okerenkoko hospital funded by Tompolo shuts down

OKERENKOKO—THE Delta State Government- owned Okerenkoko Cottage Hospital, Okerenkoko, Warri South-West Local Government Area of the state, renovated and furnished with state-of-the-art facilities by former militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo, after the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC, abandoned it in 2009, has again been closed down.

Sources said that the hospital was locked up due to lack of funding following the current travails of Tompolo, who provided free health services to people of the area in the hospital.

Security agents are hunting for Tompolo following a bench warrant by a Federal High Court in Lagos for his arrest.

At press time, all the medical personnel at the hospital, the only government health institution in Gbaramatu Kingdom, whose salaries were paid by Tompolo since 2014, have deserted the hospital.

Among them were four doctors, four laboratory scientists, four pharmacists, eight nurses, four health recorders and other health workers, whom he personally employed to provide free health services to residents of Gbaramatu Kingdom, as a way of complementing government healthcare delivery.

Besides Gbaramatu Kingdom, the hospital also serves the riverine dwellers that troop from other parts of the state, Edo, Ondo and Bayelsa. The Tompolo Foundation established by the ex-militant leader took over both the Okerenkoko and Ogulagha cottage hospitals and had extended a helping hand to other government hospitals in Warri, Ekpan and Patani.

DESOPADEC, which initially ran the health facility, abandoned it in 2009 after the Joint Task Force, JTF, in the Niger Delta, bombed and destroyed some facilities in the hospital while hunting for militants that allegedly killed some soldiers.

National President of Ijaw People Development Initiative, IPDI, Austin Ozobo, who spoke, yesterday, on the development, said: “The witch-hunt of Tompolo by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has crumbled medical services in Gbaramatu Kingdom, as the cottage hospital is the only health facility in the riverine area.”

“You can see the difficult situation that EFCC has foisted on the people, the commission has made Tompolo unavailable to continue with his humanitarian services of funding the only government health centre in the kingdom and that has made medical personnel under his pay roll to leave, as the government is not ready to continue payment and operation.”

Bayelsa Assembly holds public hearing on Child Rights Bill

Yenagoa—Bayelsa State House of Assembly, yesterday, said that it was committed to the protection of the Bayelsan child against molestation and abuse.

The leadership of the House, at the one-day public hearing in Yenagoa, in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, European Union, EU, United Nations Office on Drugs and crime, UNODC, Bayelsa State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development and Bayelsa Child Protection Network, said that the public hearing was a critical requirement as it would enable the public to scrutinize the bill before it is passed into law.

Chairman, Joint Committee of the House on Judiciary and Justice and General/Social Development, Bernard Kenebai, who declared open the hearing, said that though the proposed Child Rights Bill had undergone several processes of scrutiny, including first and second reading on the floor of the House, the public hearing will ensure that the bill gets speedy passage with inputs from critical stakeholders.

He said: “The UNO and the AU, in the interest of the child, developed the Convention on the Right of the Child, CRC, and Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, CRWC, in November 1989 and July 1990 respectively. The purpose of these instruments is to establish a universal template (comprising standards and principles) for the handling of child based issues.

“Nigeria domesticated the CRC in 2003 with the passage of the bill by the National Assembly and subsequent accent by the President. With issues of child rights being in concurrent legislative list, the baton was handed over to the state Houses of Assembly to do same putting into consideration their localities and peculiarities.”

Hunt for Tompolo’ll backfire —N-Delta youth leader

WARRI—A Niger Delta  youth leader, Azaiyi Piniki, has said that the desperation by the Federal Government to arrest ex-militant leader and arrowhead of the Niger Delta struggle, Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo, at all cost will turn out to be counterproductive in the long run.

Piniki, in a statement, said that Tompolo’s persecution baffles the people who know his patriotic role in Gbaramatu Kingdom, Delta State.

He said: “The consistent harassment and intimidation of Tompolo will be counter- productive and I advise the Federal Government to see dialogue as a better option, rather than employing military might that has today raised tension in the Niger Delta.”

The youth leader said that the people of Gbaramatu Kingdom already understand that the purported scrapping of the Nigerian Maritime University project proposed by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, was politically motivated.

He said that the cancellation amounts to denying the people of the area their right to development, adding that the terrain was part of the country and produces “reasonable income for Nigeria.”

He said: “The university will provide jobs for the teeming unemployed Nigerians and further stem the tide of youth restiveness in the riverine communities that has been without any form of tertiary institution.  So, why are they cancelling it?

“I think the Federal Government should stop playing politics with development, as every part of country deserves government’s attention and development. Before government came out with the decision, the Minister of transportation should have visited the site for on–the- spot assessment of work done.

“He cannot sit in Abuja and cancel a project of such magnitude, which is capable of lifting the economy of the area, and raise the standard of living of the people.”

Mark sworn in as Senator for 6th time

ABUJA—Former President of the Senate, Senator David Mark, was yesterday, sworn in for a sixth record time as a senator.

The swearing-in, which was conducted by his successor, Senate President Bukola Saraki, was done amid an uncommon solidarity as the senators gave Senator Mark a standing ovation.

As soon as the senator, who wore white agbada with Idoma cap, walked in, the senators clapped as they welcomed him back into the senatorial wings with shouts of the youngest and most ranking.

Mark was sworn in at exactly 11 am in the hallowed chamber after taking the traditional oath of office and allegiance.

After he was sworn in, he walked to Saraki and shook him.

Also sworn in as a senator was Ahmad Salam Ogembe, PDP, Kogi Central senatorial district.  He took over from Mohammed Ohiare.

Liverpool rout City to avenge League Cup heartache

Liverpool avenged their League Cup heartache as they condemned Manchester City to a third consecutive Premier League defeat with a 3-0 victory at Anfield on Wednesday.

City beat Liverpool in the League Cup final on Sunday but there was to be no repeat for Manuel Pellegrini’s side as Liverpool’s superior commitment and possession paid off on a bitterly cold night on Merseyside.

Goals from Adam Lallana, James Milner and Roberto Firmino left City’s title challenge in tatters and they now sit 10 points behind leaders Leicester, with even their top four place under threat from Manchester United, who are level on points with their rivals.

Yaya Toure’s calm spot-kick won the Wembley shoot-out for City, who were also indebted to goalkeeper Willy Caballero’s three penalty saves.

But both were absent for this rematch, with Caballero resuming his place on the bench as Joe Hart returned for this critical match while Toure was absent with a foot problem.

Liverpool’s best player on Sunday had been Lucas Leiva, deputising in central defence, but he was missing on this occasion due to a thigh problem as Reds boss Jurgen Klopp made five changes.

Daniel Sturridge was also sidelined, but any Liverpool fears about their attacking intent without the England forward were soon forgotten.

As a result of Liverpool’s switches, the home side looked much fresher than City

The Reds enjoyed far more possession as the first half progressed but City’s defence, led be the ever-impressive Vincent Kompany, refused to be cowed.

City produced few clear-cut chances as one Sterling effort flew into the Kop end but Liverpool then found another gear and set themselves on the path to victory.

After 33 minutes, Lallana had few options available from 30 yards out so decided to test Hart and his surprising effort snuck into the bottom corner.

The goal caught Hart, and Anfield, unawares and was initially barely celebrated as few in the stadium knew it had settled in the back of the net.
– Slice of luck –

However, four minutes before the break there was absolutely no doubt that Milner had doubled the lead as he finished off a wonderful passing move to poke past Hart.

Seconds before the interval, Liverpool also got a slice of luck where Milner clearly handballed a Sergio Aguero header from a corner but it was missed by the officials.

The incident was an indicator that it would be Liverpool’s night and they confirmed that after the restart.

A vocal and excited Anfield urged Liverpool forwards and Firmino was again at the heart of the action in the second half, pulling the strings against a City side that began to look increasingly ragged.

Liverpool’s freshness paid off again as Firmino capped off a superb passing move.

Gael Clichy’s poor tackle allowed Lallana to pick the ball up outside the penalty area and his inch perfect pass found Firmino, who slotted into the far corner.

Liverpool continued to hunt for goals and Hart had to be at his very best shortly after the third goal.

England midfielder Milner blasted goalward from 25 yards, but Hart did well to tip the effort wide.

City never gave any hint that they could fight their way back into the contest and Liverpool also took their foot off the gas towards the end because it was clear that the job was done.

But the loss is another hammer blow to City’s title ambitions this term and the inquest in the coming days about the manner of this defeat is likely to be loud and painful for Pellegrini.

Police finally hand Ese Oruru over to her mother, father says her abduction is mysterious

The Nigeria Police Force have finally handed over ‘abducted 14 year old girl Ese Oruru, to her mother. They are currently at the Inspector General of Police’s office where they will be addressed and thereafter taken to the airport for a 5pm flight from Abuja to Port Harcourt, en route Bayelsa State.

Meanwhile Ese’s father, Charles Oruru, believes her abduction is mysterious. He says he will be taking her to a church, particularly T.B Joshua’s church, for deliverance once she gets back home

“I know my children. I know when they come back from school and that they normally come back with other children. When they go to the market, they come back together with their mother. They don’t even go anywhere without telling the mother or myself. That is why I am saying it is not ordinary because how can a small girl of 13 years just run away from home without even any cloth except the one that is on her body? So it is not ordinary. When she comes back, I will take her to a church where they will pray for her so that she will become normal and apart from that continue her school”he said

Ese’s Elder brother, Kelvin Oruru, (pictured above) said Ese gave him utmost respect as a younger sister would and that while in school, Ese who is a member of the school’s Scripture Union, would come with some of their members to preach to him

“When she was around I was in SS3 and I was the school’s social prefect. Sometimes in their Scripture Union, she will follow her friends to come and be preaching to me to stop flogging students”he said

On allegations that Ese might have had an affair with Yinusa while he was in Bayelsa, Patricia, the eldest of the Oruru children (pictured above) said this wasn’t possible as their parents brought them up in a christian manner. She refuted claims that Ese ran away from home with Yinusa because she was being maltreated

“Ese was never maltreated. We have equal treatment in our house. We all do go to school. She went to school like the others”.

Igiebor to petition Buhari over alleged mismanagement by Edo govt

A Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, chieftain in Edo State, Mr Osahon Igiebor, has expressed misgivings over what he termed the mismanagement by the present government of the state under Governor Adams Oshiomhole of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Igiebor has vowed to petition the governor before the presidency to constitute a panel to investigate the accounting books of the state from the period between 2008 till date to ascertain claims that the records of development projects being put in place equal the financial expenditures of the state governor.

He said: “My point is this, not that I have anything against Oshiomhole on projects, but for the purpose of accountability, transparency, due process and good governance, I am of the opinion that the present administration in the state is guilty of laws of proper financial appropriation to projects against the backdrop of international best practices.

“There is no rationale behind the high unemployment in the state as a result of companies the government left moribund, the numerous basic schools that are below standard and abandoned against the governor building of a new university in his home town while others are left to rot and are in state of decay.

“In a couple of weeks from now, it is my believe that anti-graft agencies should begin by carrying out an investigation into the accounting books of the state government.”

“Since the present mantra of change is focused on fight against corruption, my interest to notify Mr. President, Mohammadu Buhari through a petition to order a thorough audit of Edo State financial transactions in the last seven years to exposed a whole lot of leakages of huge and reckless spending by the government on projects which in most cases have no direct impact on the people,” Igiebor intimated.

Anioma youth leader condemns PDP defectors

Jonathan Goodluck and PDP governors in Bayelsa

Following the recent defection of some leaders and members of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Delta State, the National President of Anioma Youth Council for Change, AYCC, Joshua Okoh, yesterday, wondered if the party was dead in the state.

In a statement, Okoh frowned at the way PDP leaders in Delta North senatorial district seem uninterested in the progress of the party even with 2019 in mind, despite political appointments by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

Lambasting Delta North politicians for not being active in the present administration, he, however, commended the Urhobo born politician, Chief Sunny Onuesoke, for being feasible in the scheme of things as far as Okowa’s administration was concerned.

He urged other ethnic groups from Delta North and South senatorial districts to emulate Chief Onuesoke, who is from Delta Central senatorial district.

King was sentenced to death by a Lagos High Court in Ikeja on January 11, 2007 for murder and attempted murder of some of his church members in 2006.

The sentence was affirmed last Friday by the Supreme Court in a judgment read by Justice Sylvester Ngwuta.

The apex court dismissed the appeal of the bearded controversial preacher, saying it was lacking in merit.

Bin Laden left millions for jihad in handwritten will

Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden had millions of dollars stashed in Sudan and wanted most of it to be used to fund jihad, according to a handwritten will released Tuesday.

The document was among a tranche of newly declassified files that had been seized by Navy SEALs on May 2, 2011 when they descended on Bin Laden’s hideout in the Pakistani garrison town of Abbottabad and killed him.

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) released dozens of documents, including one they said was bin Laden’s will that deals with monies in Sudan.

Written in Arabic on a single piece of lined paper, the signed will states bin Laden had about $29 million in Sudan, and that much of it had come from his brother.

“I received twelve million dollars from my brother Abu Bakir Muhammad Bin (Laden) on behalf of Bin Laden Company for Investment in Sudan,” he wrote, according to the ODNI’s translation of the document.

“I hope, for my brothers, sisters, and maternal aunts, to obey my will and to spend all the money that I have left in Sudan on jihad, for the sake of Allah.”

Bin Laden sheltered in the Sudanese capital Khartoum for five years in the early 1990s. The ODNI did not immediately return a call seeking information on what happened to the purported hoard.

The documents also show a growing schism between bin Laden’s lieutenants and Al-Qaeda in Iraq, and said bin Laden was planning a worldwide media campaign for the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

In a letter to his father dated August 8, 2008 bin Laden wrote that he was worried about being assassinated.

“If I am to be killed, pray for me a lot and give continuous charities in my name, as I will be in great need for support to reach the permanent home,” bin Laden wrote.

He also asks his dad for absolution, without saying what he might be regretting.

“I would like you to forgive me, if I have done what you did not like,” he wrote.

A first tranche of documents released last May showed bin Laden was worried about drone strikes, and in which he laid out plans to groom a new cadre of leaders.

Bin Laden also warned that conflict with regimes in the Middle East would distract the extremists from hitting hard at what as far as he was concerned is the real enemy — America.

JAMB: Answers not in the options, lament candidates

Some candidates of the on-going Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, said aside the lateness in starting the examination, a bigger challenge was with the English Language paper as answers to some of the questions were not made available.

Speaking to Vanguard, Miss Basirat Jerah, whose examination center was at the Yaba College of Technology, said “the examination scheduled to commerce at 6:30am started by 8:45am as a result of server failure, but the surprising aspect was that some of the questions on English Language were wrong as the answers were not in the options given. Only God knows what would become our fate as we pray JAMB officials would consider this when marking and grading us.”

Collaborating Jerah’s claims is Miss Precious Ogunlele who also wrote the exam at Yaba College of Technology, who said “Questions 11-20 of English Language were incorrect as the answers were not on the options. We only pray and hope this would be taken into consideration so as not to negatively affect our scores.”

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer, JAMB, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, said the portion in question is the comprehension part whereby they have to fill in the gaps.

He said “You know these students are in a hurry to finish and most of them don’t take their time to go through the questions. Even some candidates in one of the centers I visited pointed out that to me and I had to explain to them that in comprehension, you have to fill in the gaps. I can assure you that JAMB didn’t make any mistake when setting the questions.”
