DAME EDITH OKOWA COMMISSIONS SICKLE CELL CENTRE AT AGBOR CENTRAL HOSPITAL


The wife of the executive governor of Delta State, Dame Edith Okowa has commissioned the Sickle cell centre at the Central Hospital, in Agbor. The epoch event which took place on Monday, September 21, 2015 was witnessed by the chairman Ika South Local Government Council, Hon Fred Ofume, his Ika North East and Ethiope West counterparts Hon (Barr) F.I. Eborka, and Hon Faith Majemite. Also present during the commissioning were the wife of the deputy governor, Mrs. Otuaro, Dr. Nicholas Azinge, now commissioner of Health in the state, the member representing Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency, Hon (Mr.) Amechi Mrakpor, Chief (Mrs.) Nkem Okwuofu, Mrs. Kerwe Agas, Medical Director, Agbor Central Hospital, Dr. Roy Maduka, party and community leaders, among others.

Dame Okowa while commissioning the centre pledged that it will be replicated in Central Hospitals across the state, noting that the Agbor centre was equipped with the modern haemoglobin analyzer by the 05 Initiative, a Non-Governmental Organization. She said the 05 initiative is aimed at enhancing the efficiency of analyzing full blood content, treatment and management of sickle cell patients.

The governor's wife disclosed that the programme is to benefit all Deltans and that for it to reach every community in the state; it has decided to establish centres in all central hospitals in the state.

She commended prominent Ika sons like Hon. Victor Nwokolo, Kingsley Emu, Chuky Dandy, Hon Tony Elekeokwuri for contributing generously to the project. While saying that the project is not funded by the government, Dame Okowa said she looks forward to receiving more funds from spirited individuals who are willing to contribute. He commended the role Hon.

Ofume played towards the successful commissioning of the centre, affirming that the state government is fully committed to the course of ensuring good healthy living for all Deltans.

The Director General of the 05 Initiative and wife o f the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Kevwe Agas commended the effort of the founder of the initiative, Dame Edith Okowa, positing that aim is to help cater for the health needs of Deltans particularly, sickle cell patients. She said the invention of modern scientific equipment has helped to save sickle cell patients from dying prematurely. He encouraged sickle cell patients in the area to make use of the facilities as it will help to make them live normal lives.

Responding, the Medical Director, Central Hospital Agbor, Dr. Roy Maduka thanked the wife of the state governor for floating a programme that will cater for the health needs of Deltans, assuring that all facilities in the centre will be put into good use. He used the opportunity to educate Nigerians on the ways to avoid having sickle cell children. He enjoined parents whose children are suffering from that sickle cell disease to always visit the centre for regular medical check ups.
