Ofuani Condemns Felling Of Historic Trees In Asaba

THE Director-General, Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency, Chief Clement Ofuani, has condemned the recent cutting down of the historic mango trees along Okpanam–Asaba Road, Asaba.

Speaking yesterday on development issues with journalists, Chief Ofuani described the action of the contractors working on that segment of Okpanam-Asaba road within the capital territory as “a callous murder of a people’s history and mindless degradation of the environment”.

In his words, “the action of the contractor is a sharp contradiction to the environmental sustainability initiative and urban renewal commitment of Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa’s administration as encapsulated in the SMART agenda.

Ofuani says “it is mind-boggling that at a time when the modern cities across the globe are going green, embarking on afforestation and environmental regeneration, we are cutting down an entire line of trees that constitute an integral part of a people’s cherished living history”.

He noted that trees, being a critical part of a healthy, harmonious environment, the Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency would be embarking on a tree census, and called on Asaba residents to engage in deliberate efforts at tree planting, greening and paving of the entire landscape that make up the Delta State capital territory.

“It is high time we cultivated the sanitation and healthy environmental habits and lifestyle that will translate into building a peaceful and healthy capital city that would be a preferred tourist destination, and an investors delight”, he said
