YESTERDAY POLITICAL MEN STRANDED IN TODAY 'S WORLD!
Onyiye Olomu.
...Pretty true for me,I cannot say what usually goes on in the minds of the average Nigerian politicians sometimes. But I know that virtually all of us as mortals are acquainted with this unassailable fact: that power is ever transient no matter how long you are privileged to possess it. So why then do majority of our politicians live and carry on in a manner suggestive of claims to political omnipotence and probably a never-ending romance with such ephemeral power?I am afraid that most Nigerian politicians never choose to learn from other people 's experiences;many of them keep heading towards the precipice of political ignominy and are about to topple over and then become part and parcel of the valley that occupies the 'remnants ' of the political yesteryear men who are misfits in today's world.
Just the other day,Dr Abati, the once- upon- a -time powerful Presidential Spokesperson 'wailed' about the sudden demise of his 'power ringtones ' which hitherto were the signposts of his recognition as one of the movers and shakers in the Nigerian political space.
Alas, the political leaches have all flown yonder;probably now waiting for the current or new political victims (sorry, political lords I had meant to say)who will be pampered and deceived as mystified political figures all the way until they arrive at the usual or eventual detrimental terminus- political sheep led to the slaughter.
But I am still bemused why politicians never ask such questions as : where now for instance are the men of even Dr Jonathan's Government who barely 2months away from power have become mere discarded political relics? Need we say that they have become yesterday men who are finding it hard to live in today's world?
Sadly, without the pecks and trappings of power, these past politicians are now back to same commoners who they used to chase away from the streets and roads with their maddening convoys and sirens as they hurry to only God knows where. But it is piteous that they had made themselves so far away and inoculated from the common man that the latter too have become immune to welcoming them anymore into their own world and fold.
Worse still for these weather -beaten politicians, ,the current political class also see them as irrelevant to their times and seasons. Where then to go?
...Okay,let me leave the mental soliloquy for another time.
However, may it told our political class that what matters after all is said and done is how one made use of one's political office to impact and benefit lives. Later on,not many may remember that you were once an ex-this or that. What would count to men and women would be how directly their lives were bettered through you. May this be food for thought to the political soul of someone!
Yes,it is my sincerest desire and prayers that our politicians would know this that: people may not always CARE about how much you KNOW until they KNOW how much you CARE!
God bless us all!
