Wearing waist beads among women has been an age-long culture in Africa.
However, to so many ladies, wearing waist beads has different meanings to different ladies. But it is generally believed that waist beads enhance women’s waists, making the whole ‘behind’ to be absolutely captivating.
Although nobody can place his/her fingers on when and how women started wearing beads, the fact that it is still being used nowadays is an obvious reason that it is really here to stay. Some have even modernized it to what they call ‘waist chain’. The waist chain is a copper material made in form of beads compared to the ancient ones which are made from round pieces of glasses, rubber, wood, metal and much more.
Ask a Lagos-based Jehovah Witness about waist beads and his opinion totally contradicts some of the benefits mentioned above. The young man, Vincent Mapolo, who is in his 20s, said waist bead is only worn by ‘irresponsible girls’.
Although some men do not mind, I don’t think any man can ever take such lady serious because they are only seen as as desperate and too adventurous. Ladies feel wearing beads is sexy and classy, borrowing from Wandi Coal’s song Ileke, but it all boils down to decency. I don’t like it at all. But if my wife decides to wear it in the bedroom, I wouldn’t mind.
It is however a different ball game for Mr Adeleye Shola, a Lagos-based married man with one kid. When asked, Shola in quick succession dished out some of the advantages of wearing a waist bead which he loves so much.
Waist chains can do lots of wonders. It has a way of accentuating the waist of a woman in a manner that can totally captivate the opposite sex. It also goes to show that the woman places her body, especially the waist, in high regard. I love waist chains, it makes showcases a woman in her feminine glare.
A female 27-year old accountant, Sholape Amodeni, however said although she has never used it before, she has a friend who uses the waist bead constantly.
I have never used a waist bead before but I have a friend who uses it very well. She uses it to check her waist. The moment she starts adding up, the beads get tighter on her and this helps her in checking whatever she’s eating, thereby, taking measures. It is good, I just don’t fancy it.
But newly married Nkechi, a journalist in her late 20s blatantly said wearing waist beads makes ladies look totally cheap. Only girls who are cheap will wear beads. I don’t see why a civilized lady should decide to use beads ro adorn her waist all in the name of fashion. That is one of the ‘don’ts’ of a lady. It is too trashy, don’t try it!
Mallam Usman, an Oyo-based cleric said: wearing beads is a personal decision. My religion does not have anything against wearing beads. It is actually nice to see beads on women but i would not subscribe to the way some of our ladies wear it these days. So many things have been turned upside down in this our age. May Allah help us all.
