The Nigerian police force has given details on how Chief Olu Falae, the former secretary to the government of the federation and Afenifere chieftain, was rescued by its personnel, in an operation it said was coordinated by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase.
Falae was kidnapped by unknown gunmen at his farm in Akure, the Ondo state, on Monday, September 21.
He was freed and reunited with his family on Thursday, September 24, though details of his release still remain sketchy.
However it is not clear whether any ransom was paid as his abductors had demanded a N100m ransom, later reducing it to N90m.
Olabisi Kolawole, the spokesperson for the police, in a statement on Thursday, September 24, said that the former minister was rescued after the force launched aerial and land operations in search of the kidnappers, Premium Times reports.
She said the rescue operation, which began on Monday, September 21, the same day the Afenifere chieftain was taken, took the search party to all parts of Ondo state. Falae was eventually rescued in Owo.
Ms. Kolawole said: “The rescue of Chief Olu Falae from his captives on September 24th, 2015 was made possible as the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Solomon E. Arase, fdc NPM coordinated both aerial and land operations to ensure the freedom of the former presidential candidate of the SDP.”
In the same vein former minister of aviation and spokesperson for the Goodluck Jonathan campaign organization, Femi Fani Kayode, had described the abduction of Chief Falae as “unacceptable and exceptionally dangerous”.
Ondo state police spokesperson, Wole Ogodo, had earlier said it was possible that Falae’s kidnap was masterminded by Fulani herdsmen.
