Delta State, aptly called Nigeria’s Big Heart, is proving its mettle in the inward-looking segment of economic management, with a warm harvest in internal revenue over the past five years that capped in 2014. It earned a total of N199.431b during the period to place third in the national chart of performers as assessed by the Joint Tax Board (JTB).
The JTB is an amalgam of the Federal Inland Revenue Services ( FIRS) and State Boards of Internal Revenue.
An official document of the JTB on the subject, a copy of which was made available to The POINTER in Asaba at the weekend, showed that the state, by its performance, placed third in the tally of overall leaders, behind Rivers, in second place, and the gargantuan Lagos, which topped the table with an unassailable earning in excess of N1tr.
The JTB document, tagged JTB: State Boards of Internal Revenue (SBIR) Internally-Generated Revenue Summary-2010 to 2014, placed Lagos as the overall leader on the chart that warehoused the 36 states, with a sumptuous harvest of N1,084, 289,159,292.62.
Lagos was followed on the chart by Rivers, with an earning of N345,646, 828,116.53, while Delta, with a harvest of N199, 431,764,901.08.
Fourth on the ladder was Edo State, the twin to Delta-both having been sieved from the defunct Bendel State on August 27, 1991- with N80, 218,990,916.96, followed by Enugu State which collected N67,777,419,617.00.
Other reckonable performers, according to the JTB document released at the 132nd session held in Abuja on September 14, 2015, include Akwa Ibom (N66.404b); Oyo (N65.561b); Abia (N64,523b);Ogun (N62.469b); Cross River (N57.506b);Kaduna (N55.592b); Kano (N55.093b) and Kwara (N53.727b).
Zamfara State placed last on the log, with an earning of N10.496b, just a little more than Borno, which garnered N11.728bn.
