Nigeria will launch the National Action Plan for for the full implementation of Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security (SCR 1325) by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) that was unanimously adopted 13 years ago.
The event, put together by the Nigerian Stability and Reconciliation Programme (NSRP) in partnership with the Ministry of Women Affairs, will take place on Tuesday, August 27, at the National Women for Development Centre in Abuja. Stakeholders from all 36 Nigeria states, civil society organisations, international donor agencies, and the United Nations are expected to attend the event.
NSRP provides support to the Nigerian Government for the drafting, implementation and monitoring of UNSC Resolution 1325. It seeks to make progress on the issues of women and to bring about peace through increased participation of women and girls in peace initiatives and the reduction of the prevalence and impact of violence against women and girls.
The programme is funded by the Department For International Development (DFID)
Adoption of the SCR 1325 marked the first time the UN Security Council addressed the disproportionate, as well as the unique impact of armed conflict on women by recognizing the under-valued and under-utilized contributions women make to conflict prevention, peacekeeping, conflict resolution and peace-building. It also stressed the importance of women’s equal and full participation as active agents in peace and security.
