Those with a penchant for doctors and nurses and without a fear of hospitals are flocking to a unique concept diner in Latvia. The trendy hospital-themed restaurant, named Hospitalis, sees chefs dressed as doctors and waitresses in nurse uniforms. Meals are eaten in a stylised operating theatre, on a dentist's chair or even in a gynaecologist’s exam room, served on stainless steel dishes and eaten with surgical utensils. Seasonings are added with a syringe.
Customers (or 'patients') also have the option to be tied up in a straitjacket and have their meal spoonfed to them by a nurse.

The medical restaurant in Riga, Latvia serves up peculiar macabre dishes such as cake topped with realistic-looking body parts such as fingers, noses and tongues.

At the bar, staff dressed as surgeons serve cocktails and wine in scientific flasks, beakers, test tubes, vials and IV drips.

The authentic decor features white walls and ceilings, a wipe-clean floor with shiny tiles, and walls decorated with polished surgical instruments and medical books. X-rays hang and video screens play medical clips from various popular movies.

All medical-related accessories have reportedly been supplied by real hospitals and Latvia's Museum of the History of Medicine.

The atmosphere could be described as 'sterile' but that is all part of the plan, says restaurant director Marita Bundule. She says: "Hospitalis breaks all generally accepted presumptions about hospitals as a place where various painful manipulations are performed. This is a place of surprise, where you can experience things you are usually afraid of with smile on your lips, and enjoy a tasty meal."
