THE Delta State Government has said it would not hesitate to revoke road projects from contractors who either stalled in executing or abandoned them, stressing that road infrastructure is key in achieving the SMART Agenda of the Dr. Okowa-led administration.
The Commissioner for Works, Chief James Augoye stated this during his continuation tour of the ministry’s field offices/projects in the 25 local government areas of the state.
Chief Augoye who visited Uvwie, Warri South, Udu and Ughelli South Local Government Areas explained that the tour was to have an on the spot assessment of the ministry’s staff on their readiness to key into the SMART Agenda programme in moving the state forward as it concerns the construction of civil engineering projects.
He disclosed that the present administration was desirous of embarking on massive construction of sustainable roads and drainages, across the state, stressing that as supervisors of government civil projects, the staff had a huge role in driving the vision of government.
Augoye who bemoaned the attitude of some contractors, who abandon projects and disappear with government funds, commenced the tour with a visitation to the ministry’s field offices.
He commended some of the staff, including the superintending engineer, Engr. Eric Chukwu of Warri South field office for being diligent and dedicated to duty, noting that such attitude to work was in tune with the SMART Agenda and urged other staff to emulate him.
Augoye however directed the redeployment of the superintending engineer of Uvwie Field Office back to the headquarters due to incompetence.
At the project sites, Augoye expressed satisfaction at the pace and quality of work done, especially at Ejinyere, Dederu and Akemu streets in Warri South Local Government Area where some residents thanked the state governor for bringing the dividends of democracy to their doorsteps.
Other road projects visited by the commissioner in the area were reconstruction of Ubeji Access road from the NPA Expressway to Trans-Warri Junction, construction of Okere Urhobo community roads and the overlaying of Ogunu road to Airport and Okere roads.
While calling on the contractor handling the Okpare/Olomu/Ovwodokpokpor/Ekiagbodo road to expedite work on the project, Chief. Augoye urged Deltans to maintain road infrastructure in the state, pointing out that the habit of indiscriminate dumping of refuse on the roads and drains not only deface the roads, but also obstructs free flow of water.
He further charged road users, especially heavy duty truck drivers to be cautious and avoid destroying the road, after intercepting a heavy duty equipment driver under the Effurun flyover, who almost left a major damage on it.
In the various construction sites visited, the contracting firms assured of their commitment in delivering the project according to the design and specification in the contractual terms.
