A former Senator representing Delta North Senatorial District, Pharmacist Francis Nwajei, during the week, took a critical appraisal of the relationship between a state and its citizens and concluded that for the Delta state government to succeed in its quest for development and human capacity-building, all hands must be on the plough.
Nwajei, who spoke on the heels of the spate of rumour mongering and counter-productive claims, by some individuals in some quarters of the state, against Senator Okowa’s administration, said that the world has gone beyond the stage where governance and administration of public offices are left in the hands of the elected few.
He reasoned that all citizens in the state have vital roles to play in order to reach the crest of the current administration’s mantra, which is prosperity for all Deltans. Apparently addressing aggrieved aspirants in the 2015 gubernatorial polls, the experienced politician advised that there was no need for grumbling and bickering against one another, saying that all fingers, by nature, are not equal.
Nwajei maintained that “if everybody would pay their tax, if those in the ministries would do their work, and not wait for bribes before pushing files from one table to the other; if those signing government cheque slips will not inflate figures and, if everybody will play his or her role very well, then, life will be much better and we will have a happier Delta State.
“The government is not for Okowa alone; Okowa has his own role to play, I have my own role to play, you have your role to play too. We should stop grumbling against one another because there is no way all fingers can be equal. Let us all just put our hands together, love one another and let the state grow. All the bickering must stop if we must grow as a state and a people”.
This charge by the elder statesman, is coming barely a week after the Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa urged all citizens in the State to partner with his administration which, according to him, is poised to revamping all sectors of the state.
The Governor, in a speech during the official dedication of the auditorium of the Church of God Mission International Incorporated, DLA Provincial Headquarters, Asaba, said “It is time for Delta State to grow but, all hands must be on the plough.
“The task of developing this state is like that of partnership in which everyone has a role to play. Our role, as government officials, is to be fair, accountable and just; and, to do what is right. Your duty, as citizens of Delta State, is to cooperate with us and pray for us because it is only then that we can achieve the best for our state.
“The insurgency in the country today and the downturn in oil prices causing economic woes can only become things of the past when we continue to call on the name of the lord in righteousness. We need to stay dedicated to God in prayers on behalf of the state because, this not the time for the blame game but the time to call on the name of the lord”.
