Panic: Robbers Raid Bank, Hijack ATM Machine, Kill Two
Two people have reportedly been killed at a branch of Wema Bank in Ibokun, Oriade local government area of Osun state, following a bloody raid by well armed robbers.
The robbers who came armed-to-the-teeth, invaded the bank, killing a guard and a resident of the town.
This Day reports that the armed men numbering about eight, stormed the bank on the evening of Tuesday, December 15.
They carted away huge amount of money from the bank’s vault in the operation which lasted two hours.
Police spokesperson, Mrs Folasade Odoro, confirmed the robbery. She said the police had commenced investigation into the attack.
Sources say that on their arrival, the deadly gang fired gunshots at a security agent guarding the bank and also killed a resident of the town who was passing by during the raid.
The robbers allegedly used dynamite to remove the bank’s Automated Teller Machine (ATM), carting it away after the entire operation.
A resident, who spoke to pressmen under conditions of anonymity, revealed that the robbers stormed the bank at about 5pm.
The eyewitness said that after the robbers had looted the bank, they went on to invade the Ibokun divisional police station, which is a stone throw to the bank.
They shot sporadically that the police station, scaring away the policemen on duty.
According to the source, the policemen ran helter-skelter for safety before the fleeing bandits zoomed off with their loots.
In reaction to the incident, the spokesperson for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, Prince Diran Odeyemi, expressed worry over the robbery saying it was sad the attack took the life of residents of the town.
Odeyemi blamed the escape of the bandits on what he described as the inability of the state government to effectively arm the police with sufficient equipment to combat crime.
The PDP image-maker urged the state government to intensify efforts in beefing up security within the town.
