Fraudsters On Rampage, Sell Water As Kerosene
A group of persons suspected to be fraudsters are fleecing unsuspecting buyers by selling water as kerosene.
Leadership reports that the fraudsters operate within Asaba and its environs (Delta state).
Investigation revealed that the cartel have defrauded several persons in the last two weeks including Kate Ndulue, a middle-aged business woman who is based in Asaba.
Kate, a cooking gas seller along Okpanama road in Asaba fell victim to a 2-man gang of fraudsters who offered 25 litres of water to her as kerosene.
“I was in my shop looking for customers when suddenly two well-dressed young men alighted from a tricycle and came straight to me. After introducing themselves as business men, they claimed they were hungry and I directed them to a nearby restaurant. A few minutes later they came out saying they had exhausted their money and they could no longer go back to Benin”.
“They told me they have 25 litres of kerosene and they brought it out and I gave them N 2, 000 as they requested. As soon as they left, the surface substance in the container smelt kerosene. I took some to cook for my children, only to discover it was water and not kerosene. I raised the alarm that attracted neighbours to my store. But the fraudsters had disappeared for an unknown destination” she lamented.
Celestina Kalu, police public relations officer in the state said the police are trailing the fraudsters who in recent times have defrauded several persons in Asaba and its environs.
She warned members of the public to be wary of fraudsters who disguise as business men.
Meanwhile, a notorious robbery suspect identified as Boy Raggae was killed by police operatives in Abraka during a gun battle.
The 25-year old suspect was said to have been harassing the people of Abraka in the last two years and had allegedly robbed severally before he was nabbed.
