Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, (PDP-Delta), said on Monday that the exit of some governors from the PDP would strengthen the party.
Okowa
told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Asaba that those who were left
behind would work hard to ensure that the party excelled in the
subsequent elections.
He said that the development was a welcome
development, adding that it would entrench competition necessary for
democracy to grow.
According to Okowa, since the governors have
defected, those who are left in the PDP will work hard to ensure that
the party continues to win.
“But whatever is going on in this country, I think it is good for the democracy of this nation.
“We require competition for democracy to grow and once democracy begins to grow, it becomes competitive.
“It
is more likely that government will become more efficient and good
governance will definitely be the order of the game, ” he said.
In
a related development, the Rt. Rev. Justus Mogekwu, Anglican Bishop of
Asaba Dioceses, said the governors were in order if their intentions
were good.
He, however, cautioned that if their desire was to foment crises in the country, God would not allow it.
“If
the governors’ exit to new political party is motivated by genuine
desire to wage war against financial impropriety, political dishonesty
and so on, the God will be with them.
“But if they have an agenda
to destabilise the society and use the defection as a mere front, then
God will judge,’’ Mogekwu said .
He, however, advised politicians to imbibe integrity as a lifestyle, to better the lots of the people in the country. (NAN)
