Graduating Corps' Members Lament Job Scarcity


Batch 'C' 2012 members of the National Youth Service Corps yesterday took to various social networking sites to celebrate the completion of the compulsory one-year national scheme.

Many of them flaunted their NYSC discharge certificates in the pictures they updated on Facebook, Twitter, blogs, online forum and on the BlackBerry Messenger service.

With the hashtags #nysc, #pop and #BatchCPOP, the graduating corps members from different states of the federation, alongside with their friends and associates,shared congratulatory messages.via the platforms.

However, though many of them basked in the euphoria of the successful completion of the NYSC, a handful of them took time out to reflect on the unemployment situation in the country.

Newsmen who monitored the conversations online observed that a cloud of mixed feelings trailed the completion of the scheme.

Some of them expressed dim hope of employment opportunities, even as their colleagues shared the excitement that goes with passing out of the NYSC.

A particular Twitter user, @sijo04, lamented that he was passing out of the scheme with the mixed feelings of officially becoming an unemployed graduate.

He tweeted, “That clarion call was not easy. But we obeyed it anyway. My greatest achievement was making my students to love mathematics. It was never an easy feat, but I did it. I’ll miss everyone I met while serving, especially the students I taught mathematics for one whopping year!

“However, I’m passing out today with mixed feelings. I will become, officially, an unemployed graduate today. Oh, Allah, give us a better job as we step into the labour market.”

Chuba, one of the sons of a former minister of education, Oby Ezekwesili, also took to Twitter as he could not hide his joy on the successful completion of the scheme.

The Economist described the last one year as long and interesting, while also expressing concern over the unemployment rate in the country.
